For the calculus-based General Physics course primarily taken by engineers and science majors (including physics majors).

This long-awaited and extensive revision maintains Giancoli's reputation for creating carefully crafted, highly accurate and precise physics texts. Physics for Scientists and Engineers combines outstanding pedagogy with a clear and direct narrative and applications that draw the student into the physics. The new edition also features an unrivaled suite of media and online resources that enhance the understanding of physics.

This book is written for students. It aims to explain physics in a readable and interesting manner that is accessible and clear, and to teach students by anticipating their needs and difficulties without oversimplifying.

Physics is a description of reality, and thus each topic begins with concrete observations and experiences that students can directly relate to. We then move on to the generalizations and more formal treatment of the topic. Not only does this make the material more interesting and easier to understand, but it is closer to the way physics is actually practiced.

About the Author

Douglas C. Giancoli obtained his BA in physics (summa cum laude) from UC Berkeley, his MS in physics at MIT, and his PhD in elementary particle physics back at the UC Berkeley. He spent 2 years as a post-doctoral fellow at UC Berkeley’s Virus lab developing skills in molecular biology and biophysics. His mentors include Nobel winners Emilio Segrè and Donald Glaser.

He has taught a wide range of undergraduate courses, traditional as well as innovative ones, and continues to update his textbooks meticulously, seeking ways to better provide an understanding of physics for students.

Doug’s favorite spare-time activity is the outdoors, especially climbing peaks. He says climbing peaks is like learning physics: it takes effort and the rewards are great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Readable, accessable. Excellent text unlike many others

I bought this because the text for my class is a worthless convoluted piece of crap that assumes you already have two semesters and A's in the classes it is for... and now it is going to show you fancy notation and pictures.

This book from Giancoli, however, is amazing. I learn from this book in order to do the problems from my required text.

If you are a physics professor, do not use Tipler, use Giancoli. Tipler assumes you already know physics, or want to spend hours a day in self discovery, sorry I am not Isaac Newton.

This is a fine example of what a good physics book should be. If you ever get confused in lectures all you need to do is flip through the book and find what you are looking for. The example problems provide great practice and often contain some humorous elements. It is a great book, but save the money and buy used.

Good book but it came in kind of damaged with some writing in it. I really hope I'm not charged for it or anything...

I enjoy this book. It seems to be alot more difficult than my tests so I figure if I can read and study the book and understand it then I'm definitely all set.
