John is Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Pro Vice-Chancellor (Faculty of Education & Arts) and Professor of Sociology at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He is a past President of the Australasian Council of Deans of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (DASSH, 2013-15) - the peak body for the liberal arts in Australia and New Zealand.

John is a former President of TASA: The Australian Sociological Association (2002-04), having served on its Executive for 12 years during which time he was Vice-President (1999-2002), established TASAweb and was its editor (1996-2005), and was an Editorial Advisory Board Member for the Journal of Sociology (2002-09). He is a former Executive Board member of the ISA: International Sociological Association (2002-06). In 2010, he received the prestigious national honour, the Outstanding Service to the Australian Sociological Association Award.

His research interests span the social determinants of food and alcohol consumption and production, public health nutrition policy, ethical consumption, workplace change, alcohol consumption and harm minimisation, interdisciplinary wine studies, and the history of sociology.
