5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand and good homework problems

I just used this book in the Spring '09 semester for the first half of Linear Algebra (my school likes to take forever to get through things, consequently, we have Linear Algebra I and II).

The book was easy to read and understand and the homework problems were pretty good (but at times laborious). It also had a lot of good background information and examples of how this type of mathematics is used today in research and industry.

I got a 3.0/4.0 in the course, so I'm pleased. I would recommend this book for your college.

4.0 out of 5 stars for clarification of basic principles its excellent

    Hi
I bought this on the strength of the description. Its not very deep, but has a broad viewpoint. If you wish for the clearest production of the basic principles or methods alligned to algebra, to allow easier progression to harder topics-abstract algebra- it would be hard to beat.
Its so easy to digest, and printed on high quality paper, so it will last for years on a shelf.
It is expensive, i realise this. If you comfortable with topics in algebra, thats fine. But if your memory just need a bit of revision, its a good book.

I got this textbook to help me while taking my first yea linear algebra at university. The instructor was (is) a great teacher but the course did not have such a clear textbook so I got this book to help explain someone of the concepts covered. This book was particularly helpful in explaining Gaussian elimination (reduce a matrix) which was basically the key to doing well in my course.
