5.0 out of 5 stars A modern textbook useful to even non-medical professionals
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI'm not a doctor, which is why I'm writing this: part of Gray's appeal is that it's readable by anyone who wants a better understanding of anatomy if they're prepared to put in the effort. This review is of the Kindle edition.
100+ years of development really show. The text, while it explains complex connections and concepts in their Latinate terminology, is in fact beautifully simple, straightforward sentences in logical sequence. (Which is how all textbooks should be.) The illustrations are also logically coloured and extremely consistent from page to page and chapter to chapter. The parts of the book are logically divided and it's easy to dip in and out. My big goal for 2017 is simply to read it cover to cover to foster a greater understanding, although I have no prior medical knowledge.
A few quibbles, which may not be quibbles to medical professionals. I expected the section on neuroanatomy to include content on how the brain *thinks* as well as *works*, ie. which parts of your grey matter are responsible for which functions. Obviously I misunderstood the word. And on Kindle, the chapter titles look very strange, since the text is force-justified creating big gaps between words. (Great for body text, not for headlines.) But for a very graphic textbook on a 6" screen it's all perfectly readable. For diagrams, however, you'll need Kindle for PC/Mac or a large tablet to see the detail. And detail is important, because with it you'll find yourself drawn in wonder at how your body works. ("Lines of skin tension on the dorsum of the trunk", anyone?)
Like Albert's "Molecular Biology of the Cell", it's a superlative textbook that every home should have at least one copy of. The best resource, updated with a fresh, modern feel and the latest information - it's a true masterwork.
