I. New and Updated Content
Updated content ensures a contemporary survey of the field
- UPDATED! The art and visual program has been updated to give the Twelfth Edition a modern, cohesive feel, as well as to keep up with the latest findings and studies in the field.
- UPDATED! The Twelfth Edition’s updated research reflects both the enormous advances made in research methods and the discoveries these methods have revealed. By covering the latest methods and techniques, the authors ensure that the text stays atop the latest trends and findings in the field.
- New co-author Melissa Birkett joins Neil Carlson for the Twelfth Edition, assisting in revisions to the chapter structure and the addition of new pedagogical features, which include learning objectives and revised thought questions.
A more robust learning architecture guides student through the text and highlights key concepts
- As compared to previous editions, key information has been better scaffolded within each chapter. The authors have reorganized material so that readers can better identify important concepts and also better see how those concepts relate to each other in more comprehensive patterns.
- Learning objectives at the beginning of each major section of the text help students identify and understand the key points from each section. The learning objectives are revisited in summaries at the end of each section.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Insightful Text for Understanding Human Behavior
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI purchased Physiology of Behavior, for my university course, and it has been an excellent resource. The textbook is thorough, breaking down complex concepts in neuroscience, psychology, and physiology in a way that’s easy to understand. It offers a detailed exploration of how biological processes influence behavior, making it an invaluable tool for students in psychology and related fields.
The chapters are well-structured, with clear explanations, helpful diagrams, and real-world examples. The global edition also includes up-to-date research, ensuring that the content is relevant and current. As someone new to the subject, I found the book accessible without sacrificing depth or accuracy.
It’s not just a textbook—it’s a great reference for anyone wanting to deepen their understanding of the physiological basis of behavior. If you're studying psychology or neuroscience, I highly recommend this book for its clarity and comprehensive coverage of the material.

Format: Loose LeafVerified PurchaseI have used Carlson in my teaching for years. I bought this copy for my TA because the new publisher policy is to only make the text available online instead of allowing me to have texts to hand out to TA, and retrieve, each semester. The publisher cost me money.
This new edition has not been thoroughly edited before publication. There are figures without figure numbers. There are figures out of order. Figure references in text are frequently buried in text rather than at the beginning or end of the paragraph where they would be easier to find.
The new edition has substantial improvements in organization of some of the text. It has added significant sections. It has also added things that are not treated well - resilience, allostasis, come to mind.
The publisher's PowerPoints with text is missing several figures. Fortunately, these can be found in publisher's PowerPoint of just the figures. PowerPoint text is not organized hierarchically by topic on slides.
As usual, I do not find the publisher's data bank for test questions to be valuable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and clear book
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseNeeded for my masters degree. Lots of clear diagrams and I like that there are lots of pictures to break up the text. Makes it a lot easier to read. The only downside is that it's an American textbook so behaviour is spelt 'wrong' throughout!
