I bought the ChinaSoft edition, copyright 1991-2006, last year, which included a cd. The book proceeds logically, and the cd makes it possible to pronounce Mandarin words and sentences correctly while looking at the characters. It would be even better if the cd contained quizzes, since it's when you're asked to come up with answers that you learn.
Looking at the cover, you might think it's for children only, but it works all right for adult learners.
This textbook stands alone, but if you want more written practice, there is a useful supplemental workbook available (also green with pandas).
I mislaid the cd and ordered the book from amazon.com again. I got the Traditional Character Edition, copyright 1995-2002, Revised Edition; the cover notes "Cheng & Tsui" instead of "ChinaSoft". Unfortunately, there was no CD!
I see that the makers of this great product have published more advanced lessons, too. Just be sure a cd is included. There's no way to pronounce things correctly just by looking at the pinyin.

For learners in upper-level elementary through senior high grades--or for anyone seeking a clear, effective way to learn Chinese--the popular Ni Hao series is a great way to begin. Ni Hao helps to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills with an approach that's fun, interactive, and informative. An attractive two-color format and humorous cartoons facilitate understanding, and keep learning interesting. The Ni Hao 1 Student Workbook is a learning activity book based on the content introduced in the Ni Hao 1 Textbook. This workbook contains a variety of activities that provide opportunities for students to practice the four communication skills-listening, speaking, reading and writing. The listening exercises for each lesson are included in the Teacher's Handbook and recorded on audio cassettes/CDs. Answers to all the questions in this book are also included in the Teacher's Handbook. Chinese characters are used in conjunction with pinyin to reinforce reading and writing skills, and characters that students should learn to write are included in the Writing Exercises section of this book. The Ni Hao series includes textbook, workbooks, audio products, CD-ROMs, and teacher's handbooks. Simplified character editions are also available.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, and great condition
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe book I bought had significant wear and tear on the cover, side and back. This is not what the seller’s description said. Disappointing.
The book is good for an introductory course, and easy to follow for kids. I like the way in which they teach stroke order.
