up to date and practical
I love the the suite of spreadsheets and find it very helpfull because they make it easier to followup the worked examples
The eurocode stuff helps a great deal to understand and explain to students the jungle of the Eurocode
Thank you Mr Smith for your precious teaching

This core undergraduate textbook for civil engineers is the first to cover the fundamental changes in the ethos of geotechnical design advocated in the now published Eurocode 7. This code will be fully adopted across Europe by 2010 and its implementation will mean a radical shift to limit state design.
Ian Smith makes understanding this new approach to geotechnical design less daunting to the student with clear explanatory text, detailed illustrations and several worked examples, covering a range of topics including slope stability, retaining walls and shallow and deep foundations. Downloadable spreadsheets help to illustrate how the new Eurocode is applied and the book′s website also gives the worked solutions to self–test questions at the end of each chapter.
Now in its 8th edition, this well–established textbook has been updated and re–designed with improved page layout and illustrations making it the essential user–friendly introduction to soil mechanics and geotechnical design to Eurocode 7.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chiaro e sintetico, ottimo per iniziare
Verified PurchaseSecondo me è l'ideale per chi vuole iniziare a studiare l'argomento perché è chiaro, abbastanza completo ma sintetico. Comunque i riferimenti bibliografici permettono approfondimenti di buon livello.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, easily understood and well written.
Verified PurchaseGot this for my MSc, pretty solid book and easier to understand in most cases than its competitor Craigs. Between the two there isn't a huge difference and if you can get only one this is the one to get as it is the more readable of the two. Combined with the online resources on the website which are free it is very useful and a nice book to have handy.
It isn't totally comprehensive and you will still want more focused texts for some things its a good starting point.

3.0 out of 5 stars Only if you are interested in the very basics
Verified PurchaseI think that this book refers to undergraduates and provides a basic knowledge on soil mechanics. It includes some examples for Eurocode too but it appeared to me that it is a bit superficial in some aspects (e.g. seepage). Overall, it's ok but I wasn't impressed.
