Farquhar's last two plays, The Recruiting Officer and The Beaux' Stratagem, have been called 'the last worthwhile comedies of the Restoration tradition'. Written during Farquhar's stint in Shrewsbury as part of a recruiting mission in 1704-5, The Recruiting Officer is a buoyant, whimsical piece stocked by a fairly conventional cast of characters- the rake-hero and his spirited lady (who dons breeches in the course of the action), his sober friend and the heroine's serious friend, the buffoon/coxcomb and his ill-fated amorous or heroic ventures. What makes the play entertaining is Farquhar's light, humane touch; what makes it original is his depiction of a real-life provincial town and the impact that ongoing warfare (in this case the War of the Spanish Succession) had on its civilian society.

Book Description

This edition sheds light on Farquhar's work, highlighting its status as an account of army corruption and sexual intrigue, and its relevance to later literature such as Brecht's Trumpets and Drums, Keneally's The Playmaker, and Wertenbaker's Our Country's Good.

5.0 out of 5 stars and I was glad I could just go to amazon and order it ...

I needed this for school, and I was glad I could just go to amazon and order it and know it's exactly what I was looking to find. As for the play itself, I highly recommend it. You know it's a good story/play when you don't mind having to read it over and over for analysis and design purposes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good edition for theatregoers

An excellent annotated edition that is small enough to slip in a pocket to take to the theatre. As cheap and more informative than buying a programme.

4.0 out of 5 stars A delightful romp
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 March 2014

I found George Farquhar's Restoration comedy to be a delightfully entertaining and light-hearted romp. Despite being written just over 300 years ago the language is not too difficult to understand, certainly easier than Shakespeare and his contemporaries. I bought (for free) the kindle version of the play. Because of this, there are no annotations or notes, just the play. However, there is a cursory introduction to Farquhar and the play, which gives a brief synopsis of the play, and some criticism of the work.

This is a standard Restoration comedy, which includes such plot devices as women pretending to be men, fortune-tellers, rakes, fops, bawdiness and sexual connotation, stock characters such as the womanising Captain Plume.

All in all I would recommend this. I would like to see this performed live and look forward to reading more of Farquhar's works in the future.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decently amusing, but not a truly memorable play

It is a light-hearted play, amusing in places, but it lacks the sharp, sparkling humour and character observation of the best late 17th-century and early 18th-century comedies. A better edition would have explanatory notes.
