Focus: Family Law provides an ideal introduction to family law. It contains clear explanations and analysis of the law and its underlying policy, as well as a synopsis of the facts of, and excerpts from, the leading judgments in key family law cases. Problem questions at the end of each chapter provide the opportunity to apply the principles to hypothetical scenarios, encouraging discussion of the broader impact of family law. This ninth edition provides extensive discussion of recent cases and policy, including the commencement of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia in September 2021. Significant developments covered in this edition include:
• integration of the discussion on married and de facto property into one chapter
• habitual residence as a jurisdictional consideration for parenting applications under Family Law Act 1975 s 69E
• references to the newly commenced Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Family Law) Rules 2021 updated throughout
• current Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia practice and procedure following the 2021 court merger

- Reviewed in Australia on 25 March 2025Whilst this book serves as a useful aid to the study of family law, it contains a number of typos many of which are not insignificant.
As an example, the book commonly mixes up the Family Law Act and Marriage Act when referencing particular sections of each legislation (e.g. "s 88G(1) of the FLA" on page 83 - when such a section does not exist in the Family Law Act and is instead found in the Marriage Act). This reduces the reader's ability to confidently rely on what's stated without double checking every reference for potential errors. This is something that should have been checked in editing rather than left to the reader.
Speaking of editing, the book is in dire need of it. At times the book is needlessly repetitive in a way that can only be explained by a lack of editing. For example consider the following passage on page 77-78
"In practical terms this means that the marriage of a man is prohibited if his intended spouse is his:
• mother or father;
• daughter or son;
• granddaughter or grandson;
• grandmother or grandfather;
• sister or brother (whether of the whole blood or the half-blood).
Likewise, the marriage of a woman is prohibited if her intended spouse is her:
• father or mother;
• son or daughter;
• grandson or granddaughter;
• grandfather or grandmother;
• brother or sister (whether of the whole blood or the half-blood)."
These might seem like nitpicky complaints but these are just 2 examples of common issues throughout the book.
Whilst I recognize that consolidating the law relevant to a particular area of practice is no easy undertaking, the high price of this book should reflect a complete final product, not a draft whose defects are to be remedied by its readers.
My 2 star review reflects the higher standard that lawyers and law students should be able to expect from works such as this.
