Sociolinguistics is the study of the interaction between language and society. In this classic introductory work, Janet Holmes and Nick Wilson examine the role of language in a variety of social contexts, considering both how language works and how it can be used to signal and interpret various aspects of social identity. Divided into three parts, this book explains basic sociolinguistic concepts in the light of classic approaches, as well as introducing more recent research.
This sixth edition has been revised and updated throughout, using key concepts and examples to guide the reader through this fascinating area, including:
• New material on gender, social media and online use of language, codeswitching, and language policy
• An updated companion website that is fully cross- referenced within this book and features video and audio materials and links to useful websites
• Revised examples and exercises that include new material from Asia and South America
• Fully updated further reading and references sections
An Introduction to Sociolinguistics is an essential introductory text for all students of sociolinguistics and a splendid point of reference for students of English language studies, linguistics, and applied linguistics.

Product description
Review
"This excellent and accessible textbook is tried and tested. I have used it for undergraduate courses in Europe and Asia for more than 20 years with great success. The 6th edition discusses even more languages and countries, and each chapter includes a methodology section which will help students engage in sociolinguistic research."
Hans Ladegaard, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, China
"For those (students or laypersons) fascinated in the role, functions, forms, and uses of language – and policies relating to them – in our (and others’) social worlds, then this is the introduction for you. It is uniquely reader-friendly with global examples of a myriad of concepts central to sociolinguistics, aligned with intriguing exercises (and their answers) that ensure complete understanding and mastery."
Howie Giles, University of California, USA, and University of Queensland, Australia

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book but the font kills。
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseGreat textbook but with a tiny font, so I really struggled to read it. Anyway, the material is explained perfectly well for those who want to recap their knowledge of sociolinguistics and make it more systematic .

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Readable, Interesting, and (Dare I Say) Enjoyable Textbook!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWe had this textbook for my Language and Society (Sociolinguistics) class and I was a little wary, but it was pleasantly readable, while still being robust! Some meh things were that there were a few charts that were a little confusing because names were abbreviated without letting the reader know and that (while there really was a huge amount of variety in the case studies used!) it felt like there were a lot of examples that just used the same four-ish communities over and over again. In the end, I highly recommend this as textbook (or just a book for anyone who wants to learn more about Sociolinguistics--and I highly recommend wanting to learn more about sociolinguistics if you are in any field of work or situation in life where you communicate with people ; )

3.0 out of 5 stars Too Many Examples, Not Enough Theory
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI bought this because it was the assigned textbook for an introductory sociolinguistics course that I took as a student in the U.S. I wanted to like this book, but it made me question my interest in the subject. On the positive side, it offers a tremendous amount of examples, detail and data (628 pages!) if that is what you are looking for. For my purposes as a student new to the field, though, I wanted more theory and concepts; I wanted the detail and data to illustrate theories and concepts (a deductive presentation), rather than be presented seemingly as an end in itself in search of theories or concepts (an inductive approach). Deborah Tannen was a sociolinguistics professor who wrote bestsellers - sociolinguistics is an interesting topic that everyone can relate to, but this textbook makes it boring by burying the reader in trivia.
