About the Author

David C. Howell is a professor emeritus and former chair of the psychology department at the University of Vermont. Professor Howell's primary area of research is in statistics and experimental methods. He is also the author of STATISTICAL METHODS FOR PSYCHOLOGY, currently in an Eighth Edition (Wadsworth Cengage Learning, 2013), and the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF STATISTICS IN BEHAVIOR SCIENCE (2005) with Brian Everitt. Before retiring, he frequently served as consultant to other faculty, both in the psychology department and in departments as disparate as Geology and Animal Sciences, and brings those experiences to this endeavor. Professor Howell's other interests include computing and the World Wide Web, and how technology affects communication, teaching, and research.

    Häufig werden wir Psychologiestudenten an den Unis mit schlechten, schwer verständlichen Skripten und Vorlesungen zum Thema Statistik gequält, die meist überhaupt keinen Zusammenhang zum Studienziel erkennen lassen.

    Da wird oft von Urnen, Würfeln, Parteien, etc. etc. geredet. Howell macht dies zum Glück anders und ist daher in der Lage, Statistik auch "Mathefaulen" näher zu bringen. Der Schreibstil ist dabei sehr angenehm, sodass ich auch heute noch oft darin blättere.
    Die Erklärungen sind zudem leicht nachvollziehbar und der Autor verzichtet, wo er nur kann, auf komplizierte Formeln und deren Herleitung. Daher ist das Buch vor allem für jemanden zu empfehlen, der ein Nachschlagewerk sucht, in dem er schnell Dinge nachschauen kann, die in der Vorlesung zu kompliziert erscheinen.
    Zur reinen Übung des Wissens ist es hingegen nur bedingt empfehlenswert, weil kaum Aufgaben enthalten sind. Die Aufgaben, die enthalten sind, beziehen sich überwiegend auf reines Verständnis. Für Übungsaufgaben kann ich "Elementary Statistics" von Larson&Farber empfehlen.

    Mittlerweile gebe ich selbst Statistikkurse und verweise immer wieder gerne auf dieses Buch!
