Mad surgeon-turned-vivisectionist performs ghoulish experiments that transform animals into men. Early Wells personification of the scientific quest to control the natural world and, ultimately, human nature. Considered one of the fathers of science fiction, H. G. Wells (1866–1946) brought enormous inventiveness and an underlying social vision and moral concern to his strange tales and bizarre imaginings. A student of Darwinian biology, he formed his romantic conceptions of the scientific world at an early age. This novel, one of his first forays into the science fiction genre, concerns a mad surgeon-turned-vivisectionist who, in his laboratory on a remote island, performs ghoulish experiments in an attempt to transform animals into men, with monstrous results. It is one of Wells' earliest and most sinister personifications of the scientific quest to control and manipulate the natural world, and, ultimately, human nature itself. First published in 1896, The Island of Dr. Moreau has intrigued and horrified readers for generations. It will gain legions of new fans in this inexpensive Dover edition.

    5.0 out of 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Hands down the best chapter I've ever read

The entire novel is a masterpiece but there's a chapter in which Dr. Moreau explains himself and that steals the show. Hands down the best chapter I've ever read. Wells blends philosophy and science-fiction with dexterity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moreau is one of the first great works in Sci-Fiction

The Island of Dr. Moreau is one of the first great works in Sci-Fiction, and the title is well deserved. Wells’s novel sought to give insight about future advances in science with a gruesome twist. To begin, the mere experiments of vivisection that Dr. Moreau was performing required education in physiology, and other areas of science making the placement of the novel in sci-fi accurate. The vivisection of the animals, and their success couldn’t have been performed someone who wasn’t educated in the sciences. The inclusion of well educated scientists added credibility to the sci-fi novel. There were accurate depictions conveying the ability of the Dr.Moreau to create a creature that could advance society.
The astounding possibility of implanting human genes into animals keeps the reader interested. Even in present time the possibility of creating animals that are able to talk, think, or act like humans is very interesting. The possibility of having advances in science make The Island of Dr.Moreau ultra sci-fi. There is great imagery included in Wells’s novel, that help the reader fully understand the possibility of grotesque creatures created by implanting human genetics in animals. My favorite imagery of the creatures probably included the hyena-swine which was shown to be brutal, and untrustworthy, while the hunt of the leopard man took place the hyena-swine attacked the leopard,“ by thrusting its thirsty teeth into its neck”. The dogman is also loyal, and trustworthy to Pendrick. Even when the dogman reverts back to his previous state, he continues to be loyal to Pendrick by following him around, and leading him to remains of the creature the hyena-swine killed.
Most importantly, Wells wanted readers to know about the future dangers science could pose. The advances that Dr. Moreau made in the novel were impressive. Yet, the creation of the beastmen in the novel eventually lead to the death of Dr. Moreau, not to mention his obsession with his studies. At various points in the novel Dr. Moreau is shown to be removed from the rest of the characters because he is busy working on his experiments. Similarly, Pendrick is left traumatized by the beastmen creations that have been the cause of scientific advancement. Pendrick, is shown to confide in religion because it comforts him, and all the trauma he encountered on the island. The most important idea Wells wanted readers to take from The Island of Dr.Moreau was to be watchful of certain advances that science could present. With the many possibilites science allows us to experiment with like the genetic modification of human embryos, it's essential to ask yourself what good and bad can come from ground breaking science?
