Counselling and Psychology for Health Professionals Pb Paperback – 12 November 1992

The value of this text lies in its emphasis on application, the unusual nature of some of the topics and the concise summaries of more orthodox ones. Each chapter is concise and up-to-date, with guides and authoritative summaries to draw out practical implications for health professionals. The guide includes material on counselling supervision; psychological type; coping with violence; preparing children for court; evaluating the effectivness of counselling and presenting the evaluation to managers; making sense of discourse analysis and case studies. The summaries include the issue of counselling versus counselling skills; infertility; divorce; being a step-parent; child sexual abuse; stereotypes in mid-life and old age; social context; psychopathology and evaluating attempts at AIDS prevention.

'The Broken Couch' - involves the story of a fictional psychoanalyst who worked with the Nazi prisoners on trial for war crimes. It also features Dr. Wilson Coffey the reluctant spy - the hero of my first novel, 'Containment'.

Most of my working life has been as an academic psychologist - a career that I thoroughly enjoyed. Working at a university involves writing books and articles as well as teaching students but I now love the challenge of writing fiction.

The books based on my research feature domestic abuse, women's sexuality, motherhood, depression, leadership in the NHS and gender and power conflicts at work.

The 2nd edition of my book Genealogy, Psychology and Therapy: Uncovering Trauma was published by Taylor and Francis in 2022. It explores how trauma is transmitted across generations influencing who you really are.
