5.0 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED INTRODUCTION TO THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE
Reviewed in the United States on 19 February 2015
    Verified Purchase
This is an excellent and inexpensive "Handbook" introduction to the subject of Roman architecture. It is divided into both chronological and typological sections richly illustrated in striking color. While the text is rather summary it is still worthwhile and easily readable. There is even a brief 2 page discussion regarding later Church/Christian architecture in Rome, Ravenna, and Constantinople. The book also has a 23 page survey of the "Cities of the Empire" and their architecture as the "grand finale". This is especially welcome since it covers areas that are too often neglected.
From the Italian cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Ostia to the North African cities of Carthage, Timgad, and Lepcis Magna to the Eastern cities of Athens, Ephesus, and Palmyra, and the Northern cities of Trier, Nimes, Arles, and London, we are given an entire architectural tour of the Roman Empire in 125 pages! A Four page Timeline near the beginning of the book summarizing key political and cultural events of Roman history is especially helpful. No less than 16 accompanying coin illustrations bearing the portraits of Roman and Byzantine rulers in chronological order accompanies the Timeline. All in all, this book is a little gem.

The book is an excellent guide to roman monuments in all their aspects - history, architecture, evolution. Brilliant illustration, concise texts which give everything one needs to know regarding a specific structure. Thank you for the pleasure of having this treasure at home!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 February 2014

As a book on the buildings of Ancient Rome it is good. As a book on the architecture, not so much. There is not enough explanation of architecture here; like how did the Romans mix concrete for their sewers that was and still is, waterproof? How did they figure out the ideal type of archeways to makes their bridges strong?

There is no actual detail on the realities of architecture so the title is somewhat off. However as a book on Roman buildings it is very good. The book itself is a comfortable size but the print is a little small and whilst there are lots of colour pics throughout a lot of them are very small which is a shame when displaying the beauty of Rome.

For the price on here though (£5.75) I really can't fault it. An absolute bargain. Can't see how the cost of printing would leave any profit!

Roman Architecture by Nigel Rodgers gives insight about Building the City of Rome, Building Techniques and Styles, Public Buildings, Imperial Palaces, Housing, and Cities of the Empire. The book provides valuable information regarding Roman architecture back lacks some in-depth explanation. This book gives a glimpse of the glorious Roman architecture rather than provide an exhaustive knowledge of Roman architecture and engineering principles.
