In the heyday of classical Chinese gynecology roughly eight centuries ago, Qí Zhòngfǔ 齊仲甫 composed a humbly named masterpiece, to address his students', colleagues', and patients' "Hundred Questions on Gynecology." Quoting and discussing all the major theories and treatments found in earlier gynecological texts, the Chinese original of this book must have been as useful to his Sòng dynasty readers as this modern English translation will be for any practitioner of Chinese gynecology today.
One of the eminent translators of Chinese medical literature, Dr. Sabine Wilms has once again crafted a meticulously researched, lovingly phrased, and abundantly annotated translation in an attractive and accessible edition that is sure to inspire our clinical colleagues and set a new bar for the clinical practice of traditional Chinese gynecology in the West.
Features:
- Preface and clinical notes by Sharon Weizenbaum;
- Detailed historical introduction, surveying the origins of gynecology in China and summarizing earlier texts;
- Literal translation of Questions 1-14 in Qí Zhòngfǔ's 齊仲甫 Nǚ Kē Bǎi Wèn 《女科百問》 ("Hundred Questions on Gynecology," published in 1220 CE) on theoretical foundations and menstrual conditions, with the Chinese text side-by-side with the English translation;
- Extensive commentaries by Sabine Wilms on the essays and formulas, to discuss treatment strategies, related formulas, textual variants, grammatical issues, historical developments, technical terms, and contemporary relevance, and include abundant quotations from relevant medical texts, with Chinese sources for important passages;
- Character-Pinyin-English cross-listed tables for formulas and medicinal ingredients, in alphabetical order of Pinyin to English and of English to Pinyin;
- General index.
- Beautifully illustrated throughout with photographs of the author's home on Whidbey Island.

Review
"This is an important book about an essential aspect of Chinese Medicine. Sabine Wilms is, in my opinion, the best translator of ancient Chinese medical texts in the world. In this book, she provides us with an invaluable guide for women's health that is still extremely relevant today." (Lillian Pearl Bridges, director of the Lotus Institute and author of Face Reading in Chinese Medicine)

About the author

After high school and undergraduate studies in East Asian Studies in Germany, I spent two years in Taiwan studying modern and classical Chinese. I then moved to the US for my graduate studies and have lived there most of the time since, teaching, writing, and farming. I am currently teaching courses on Chinese History and Culture, Classical Chinese, Classical Medical Texts (especially the Yellow Emperor's Classic), Gynecology, and occasional electives, at the National College of Natural Medicine, in the School of Classical Chinese Medicine in Portland, Oregon, and writing, translating, and publishing my own books through my own Happy Goat Productions.
I have been studying classical Chinese writings on medicine ever since my PhD research in Asian Studies and Medical Anthropology. While my academic background has given me a solid foundation in early Chinese philosophy, science, and cosmology, and therefore in a historically and culturally sensitive approach to classical Chinese medicine, I also enjoy an ethnomedical approach to Chinese medicine as a living, clinically effective, and ever-changing response to any given cultural environment.
Some of my favorite topics for research and teaching are
- gynecology, pediatrics, and reproduction
- yangsheng 養生 ("nurturing life") as understood in the broadest sense by the great medieval "King of Medicinals" Sun Simiao 孫思邈, including dietetics, lifestyle, regulating the emotions, moral cultivation, etc.
- medical ethics, and
- the modern clinical application of the wisdom from the classics, especially Zhuangzi.
In my academic life, I am happiest when engaging in a dialogue with practitioners on how to make this ancient wisdom come to life in our modern times. In my other lives, I find bliss in holding newborn goats, racing horses in Mongolia, digging in the dirt and hugging a tree, making Sauerkraut or kimchi with my daughter, or playing cumbias on the accordion. It's all about harmonizing Heaven, Earth, and Humanity in the old yangsheng way for me.
