Maintenance, Replacement, and Reliability: Theory and Applications Hardcover – 29 September 2005
Purchase options and add-ons
Based on the results of research in physical asset management, Maintenance, Replacement, and Reliability: Theory and Applications introduces students to the tools for making data-driven decisions and how to use them. The book offers a solid theoretical foundation for these tools, demonstrating applications through various case studies. Firmly rooted in reality, the applications covered relate to areas such as food processing, the military, mining, transportation, steel, and petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries. Ideal for classroom use, this text features supplementary software that can be downloaded from the CRC Web site. The downloadable educational versions of software packages include: OREST, SMS, EXAKT for CBM optimization, PERDEC, Workshop Simulator, Crew Size Optimizer, and WiebullSoft.
This book can be used as a textbook for a one-semester senior undergraduate or postgraduate course on maintenance decision analysis. It provides problem sets with answers at the end of each chapter, an extensive set of PowerPoint slides covering the various chapters and appendices, a solutions manual for the problems in the book, and a bank of more than 100 examination questions. Instructors who adopt the book can obtain these resources at www.crcpress.com.
The authors approach the topic with the ideology that mathematical modeling is not a spectator sport. Their examination of the underpinning theories for formulating models and exploration of real-world applications make the book both informative and practical. It provides professors with the tools they need to easily teach their students how to transform data into information.

4.0 out of 5 stars A classic in its field.
Verified PurchaseI bought this book when first published, over 30 years ago but lost it somehow along the way. Now I'm engaged in teaching again and this is the book you should use to start off a group of beginners. It has a chatty and comfy style, and starts at a low-ish level with simple ideas on probability and the time-value of money. But by the end of the book, it's opened the reader's eyes to a multitude of models and means-of-analysis in practical aspects of reliability, failure and replacement of real capital assets. Almost every student I've had has said at some point, "Oh - yeah, of course..." when they realise the simplicity of seemingly complex relationships and formulae. Actually, the author doesn't use formulae. He works from first principles and gives examples. The only weakness in the book is its assumption that new students know quite a lot about probability distributions including Weibull and the exponential family; so a separate course is required to get them up to speed in these aspects before tackling the book properly. But that can be done if students are engineers, mathematicians, fairly quantitative economists and accountants, management scientists and so on. This item was delivered super quick and is in decent condition, considering that it is public library withdrawn-stock, and which seems to have been borrowed only five times since 1975.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tiny, old and still valuable
Verified PurchaseThis is book from 1997, not exactly young and still simple and very current in its contents. Of course the contents of maintenance optimisation should be taken in perspective of what was available at the time the book was written more than 20 years ago.
A very good book to give the basics on the subject.
