Good behaviour is the beginning of great learning. All children deserve classrooms that are calm, safe spaces where everyone is treated with dignity. Creating that space is one of the most important things a teacher needs to be able to do. But all too often teachers begin their careers with the bare minimum of training - or worse, none. How students behave, socially and academically, dictates whether or not they will succeed or struggle in school. Every child comes to the classroom with different skills, habits, values and expectations of what to do. There's no point just telling a child to behave; behaviour must be taught. Behaviour is a curriculum. This simple truth is the beginning of creating a classroom culture where everyone flourishes, pupils and staff. Running the Room is the teacher's guide to behaviour. Practical, evidence informed, and based on the expertise of great teachers from around the world, it addresses the things teachers really need to know to build the classrooms children need. Bursting with strategies, tips and solid advice, it brings together the best of what we know and saves teachers, new or old, from reinventing the wheels of the classroom. It's the book teachers have been waiting for.

Valuable information that should be taught in every teaching college.

This is not what I was expecting.
I don’t know if the contents of my copy of the book were different to everyone else’s, but I found the entire book a disorganised, wordy waste of time. I learnt diddly squat. There were a few times I thought it was getting good and there’d be some contextualised examples that may be useful, but then he’d go off on a tangent and talk about something completely unrelated. Would have been so good if he’d given examples such as this is what teachers do but it would be better if they did this. But it was nothing like that unfortunately. Waste of time and money…

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!

As a Canadian teacher with 32 years of classroom experience in K-12, I can say this book should be required reading in teacher formation programs and every school should provide new staff with a copy. Our class sizes have increased, the needs are growing more complex for many reasons, funding is decreasing, teachers are exhausted and we continue to keep hoping new teachers will figure it out with time. Our experienced teachers are burning out because they were never given this information. The best we offer ineffective teachers is to go observe another teacher. Tom Bennett points out that this won’t help - what they will observe if they are lucky enough to observe an effective teacher is the result of all the prior things done well. They won’t see the process of what it takes to create a well-run classroom. Buy this for yourself if you are struggling. Buy this for a new teacher as a lifeline. Buy this as an administrator to use as a roadmap. If someone had given me this information in 1991, it would have changed my career and prevented so much trial and error.

So many useful behavioral strategies here for all teachers, new and old, to consider. I think the book could have been 50 pages fewer, but that's a minor quibble when I consider how well he outlines best practice strategies that 90% of teachers could utilise for their own benefit. If teachers aren't running the room, there is a good chance students are running the show, which NEVER leads to helpful outcomes. Read this and be a far more astute and authoritative teacher. Great job, Tom.
