DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND NEVER TAKE THIS COURSE EVEN IF SOMEONE TELLS YOU TO!!!! This is by far the WORST unit I've taken in my ENTIRE three years of MQU education! The lecturers and tutors are the worst people one could ever come across in real life. Narcissistic and thinking they're above students for no reason at all, they have curated this unit to make students FAIL. First of all, MQU has implemented a 3-assessment-policy. The convenors in this unit have found a sleazy way around it, where they split one of the assessments into three parts (each part is unrelated to the others) and spread it across three weeks. So really, you've signed up to 5 assessments in one unit. Now each of those three parts are a mini essay in ITSELF. If you're taking the unit internally, you'll have to present for 10 minutes on a random topic in class. If you're taking it externally, the first week you'll have to record yourself doing a 10-minute presentation. The next two weeks were similar, except it was typing up 500-1000 word essays. If you lost marks for the first part, forget getting any feedback. The useless tutors who are meant to be giving solid education to students paying TWO THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS EACH do NOTHING but sit on their asses and grade without giving feedback. You won't even know why you lost marks or where you lost it, so you're given basically no way to know what to improve on for the next two parts, making you continue losing marks. The rubric for the unit? Some shit called the transformation rubric which is extremely subjective and clearly made up. They grade you based on how much effort they THINK you put in (spoiler alert: it's NEVER enough). When you're writing your responses, you won't know what part of the rubric to focus on or how to even implement it in your writing so you're guaranteed to lose at least half your marks for every single assignment. And then those useless good for good-for-nothing tutors don't even give you any feedback for anything so they're basically grading you based on their own mood that day. If someone recommends this unit to you, THEY'RE SETTING YOU UP. DO. NOT. TAKE. IT. The people running ABST1000 don't deserve to be paid a single CENT, they deserve to be fired and sued for playing with the education of committed, paying students and get a kick out of swindling them out of their hard earned money and mental health. My literal PACE unit is a million trillion times easier than whatever this shit is. Anyone who says this unit is easy and a WAM booster in the below comments- keep in mind that these were posted 3-4+ years ago. Things have changed since then, especially with the staff cuts in MQ which have probably gotten rid of the good people. This unit is a WAM destroyer, NOT a booster. I've spoken with at least five other peers taking this unit and ALL of them have said the exact same thing.

Was alright.

This is a very interesting subject. The content is updated and relevant to recent racial events and movements. Staff are available to help, and the assessments are not too difficult. I did this unit externally and it was still very engaging.

This subject is well organised and easy to succeed in if you have decent research essay skills. The workload is very manageable. 2-4 hours of work per week is appropriate for a mark in the 85+ range. As of 2021 S1, there is no final exam, just quizzes and a major research essay. The tutors are quite helpful, and the content is engaging. The content is informative and you are encouraged to use it as a framework to do further research on your individual perspective, which I liked. I'd recommend this unit to anybody who has an interest in the perspectives of Indigenous Peoples and sociological studies, or alternatively to anybody looking to significantly boost their WAM as a 95+ mark is very achievable.
