Not a fan of this bland course. Readings were good but the double lectures felt pointless and long. Heavy in content but the assessment feedback is worth listening to as the tutors work hard.

The course is actually quite heavy in content and work for a first year course. Lots of readings, concepts and abstract ideas to learn. I also didn't find that tutorials focused enough on analysis and even texts like Macbeth I didn't read as only a week was allocated to read and study the play. I think there are too many texts crammed in this unit and not enough attention which means longer texts like Macbeth are not given the attention to understand the themes and analyse language.

Great texts and themes. Was a LOT better than I expected from the faculty in this age

The content for the most part is engaging, enjoyable and informative. The lectures are for the most part good and the unit is very easy if you put in the time to make notes (open book exam) and do the readings. With that being said, the lectures by Victoria Flanagan make me want to scream. She clicks her tongue every five seconds into the incredibly sensitive microphone for no reason whatsoever and goes off on tangents. She clearly has no self-awareness as she takes every single opportunity to criticise white men but does not do anything to introduce diversity to her lectures, ironically only covering texts written by rich privileged white folk. As an Asian I had no representation in this course whatsoever. Every single lecture of hers has awkward criticisms of white people (even though she is the whitest person I have EVER had to speak to) jammed into unrelated content. It is clear that she has a bone to pick which she is bringing into her lectures/classrooms. The other lectures are fun to listen to but I suggest giving any lecture by Dr. Flanagan a miss and just reading the provided lecture slides as she reads directly off them anyway. I can say with utmost certainty that her lectures ruined the unit for me and I managed to get a C by the skin of my teeth despite being completely unmotivated.

This subject was a lot of work. There are a lot of readings (both primary and secondary) plus two hour lectures every week. You have to do 2 x posts in the online tutorials plus the exam at the end of the semester was quite lengthy and so are the assignments. I did this subject through OUA and had Greg Payne as our teacher. I found this course online was great! I thought I wouldn’t like online study as I was previously at UNSW on campus but I am loving it and he is very quick to reply to any queries. I didn’t feel confused about what was expected of me and I understood everything. There is a lot of content to go through but if you’re someone who likes English and reading you will like this subject. I think the main thing is to stay organised and on top of the readings, then you will be fine. PS. I also found the lecturers who presented the lectures were fantastic and my essay writing and arguments greatly improved doing this subject.

Too much content/too many texts to study in such a small period of time.

The unit is pretty good and the readings are easy and engaging. The lectures are long and it's pretty easy to zone out. If you have the right tutor, then the tutorials are great.

Antonina is probably one of the most competent lecturers I've ever had, and is clearly passionate and knows her stuff. Set readings are very interesting to read and theres a lot to talk about. Gets 4 stars instead of 5 because tutorial participation is weighted too high at 20%, enough to break your grade if you don't say enough in tutes. And believe me - you need to be saying things at every second wherever possible if you want to have a chance at having a decent tute mark.

The readings were very interesting and fun to analyse. This unit had engaging lecturers and tutorial discussions enabled critical thinking.

Pretty good intro to English but double lectures in long. But the reading is pretty easy to keep up with.
