Harsh as it may seem, this is quite an amazing subject that provides a solid foundation for database concepts.

All assessable content is taught in lectures and practised in tutorials. The subject is a mix of learning theories/ideas and applying these concepts with database software. The assessment tasks, including final exam, reflect this theoretical + practical approach. Much the course looks super daunting at first, but breaking it down makes it much more bearable. Textbook is great for extra information and examples, but is not necessary for learning fundamental content.

The marking is very harsh. If you stay on top of your work and attend/listen to lectures you will find success.

Quality highly dependent on your lecturer/tutor. 2015 lecturer was very dry, boring, monotone, and hard to understand for 2 hours. Tutor was fun and upbeat but didn't seem to care too much about the actual subject more than having fun.

It is about database management. The lecture notes and the final revision sheets provide everything is needed to pass. Yes, just to pass. If your goal is to achieve a C or a D, I have to tell you something: even if it sounds boring, try to write a summary with all the definitions. Definitions, yes, because that is what ISYS114 is about. Do not ever think you are gonna study something challenging.
