Very interesting content, and you're encouraged to bring your own perspectives and experiences into this unit which I quite liked. The content can be a bit hard to get your head around at first, and the lectures can be a bit of a bore but the content itself is some of the most interesting I've found in a first year university course, especially for an elective. The tutorials are invaluable and consolidate concepts well, so I would 100% recommend attending them. Content from this unit also helped me incorporate more linguistic lenses within essays written for other units. 4 hours of work a week should suffice. This is a very manageable D/HD.

Boring content. Boring lecturers. Did not enjoy this subject at all.

It is quite difficult to grasp some of the content and the subsequent readings (which were often very long), however there is some very interesting topics such as the role of language in culture and ideology. Lecturer was sometimes difficult to follow, but tutorials were very helpful.

Difficult content for many of the students - I found it not so bad as I had done LING120 prior and could use some of the concepts to help out during essays. On of the down sides was the lack of feedback prior to the exam. The assessments included 1x500 word essay in week 5 - Tutorial participation (writing a blog) marked in week 12 - 1x1500 word essay due week 12 - 2 hr exam with no notes - The trouble with this Unit is that apart from the small essay in week 5, there was no other feedback prior to the exam (after week 13) to know if you are making sense of the content. Waffling lectures but wonderful staff - I am a distance student and there were 2 separate on campus days to attend (about 1 month apart). No textbooks required in S1 2014.
