Reviews
This unit is controversial from other reviews, but I really found it fun. It requires work, this isn’t a unit you can cruise. Do this if you want a better understanding of how to solve mathematical problems. This unit introduces students to new concepts (Lagrange Multipliers are introduced in MATH235, but done in week 11 here) so it does cover some complex topics. But if you attend lectures, take notes and work through the problems during the week, the unit can be quite smooth. Just work consistently, go to numeracy centre and/or hire a tutor if you need. This unit is definitely doable, it’s not impossible, just put in some time and you’ll be fine.

This unit provides very little useful detail or examples in regards to finance and economics, which is what it's meant to be aimed at. The lecturers are pretty useless, will go over the absolute basics of the content and then expect you to understand the rest on your own. This unit has a ridiculously high workload for a 100 level unit, and my other grades suffered because of it. I would not recommend this unit at all, the only reason that I took was because it was recommended before studying AFIN102, however, the concepts in MATH123 are way past any of the concepts covered in AFIN102.

If you need to learn mathematics. Go on khan academy. Lecturers are crap. General maths students will find it very difficult. Easy subject if you did mathematics in high school.
Anonymous, Semester 1, 2017
This subject is very difficult if you have only a general math HSC background. If you want to do really well you will need to put in A LOT of time or do a bridging course prior.

For those with Additional/ Advance Maths background, the first 6-8 weeks can be a bore. However, the weeks after is challenging. Practice is everything. There is no such thing as too much practice in maths

The lecturers cover the basics of the course in lectures and assume that you will be able to understand the rest in your own time. This is a very advanced course with a very high failure rate

MATH123 started out quite easy in the first 2 weeks, then got quite complicated very quickly. It also has a lot of content on Financial and Accounting, so perhaps suitable for a FBE student who wants to get credit points for planet unit.

As the lecturers warn at the beginning, learning 2 years of math in 13 weeks is HARD. If you did advanced math in high school, good for you - easy credit. If not, this is a good unit for learning concepts of calculus for use in finance/economics. But you'll have to spend a lot of time doing the work to get much more than a pass.
