Reviews

For those doing a non-psych degree and considering taking this as an elective because you're interested in psychology, I'd suggest going for PSYU1102 instead. That one has actual interesting content suitable as a flexible unit, whereas 1101 content is more for those training to be psychologists. So it's a lot of research and history stuff. For those studying psychology as their degree, it's a good introductory core unit (still found 1102 more interesting tho!)

This unit was very content loaded and I definitely found it interesting but it got overwhelming at times. It's a relatively easy subject to get a good grade in, just make sure not to fall behind on lectures or it can be difficult to catch up.

To clarify, I did this subject in S3 of 2021 therefore it was even more packed with content than it usually is. The tutors do a good job at explaining your doubts and clarifying any questions. However I must say that the content itself is very dry and the readings you are given sometimes do not even match with that specific week's content or lecture. And this is just my thinking, but I believe that a sole essay worth 30% of your entire mark is a bit silly (one of the reasons being that the essay instructs you to focus on a very minute topic of the unit). Something I wish that would have happened to make the unit experience overall better is that the assessment percentages be spread out. For example having weekly quizzes worth 'x' amount of percentage and not just one thing being worth like 30-40%.

I did not enjoy this subject. I found the content really dry and uninteresting, and became super unmotivated. They give a lot of random concepts at the start with not enough depth so you don't get a proper understanding of what it means. There are no past exams available and there are no weekly quizzes so I found studying the content was difficult. The pracs did not relate well to the lecture. This subject did my head in. Really not for me. Too bad it was a prerequisite to everything else in my course. If you have to take this subject try to join the PAL classes apparently they help a lot.
