Not a terrible unit. The lecture content is fairly interesting, and it's all you need for the exam. The field work was also quite interesting. However, one of the assessments about specific global challenges was dreadfully hard and confusing. The fortnightly tutes were also not very helpful in regard to the actual content. It felt a lot like going to Year 8 Humanaties classes and making presentations lol.

This subject is poorly constructed with the new lecturer reading almost word for word from reformated slides. The workshops lack benefit to content and the essays were marked unreasonably harsh with only 1% of students receiving a HD. Overall, a poorly organised unit which is incredibly difficult to achieve equivalent scores to other first-year subjects.

Getting an HD in this unit is the real global challenge

The Global Challenge is positively dreadful to be perfectly honest. The content matter is slow and mainly irrelevant or common sense, the lecturer is disorganised and expects too much for too little reward and the tutorials are sparse and unhelpful for the course. Also, the lecture theatre the 2 hour lectures are held in has no ventilation and is therefore very, very hot. I don't recommend this subject unless it is a requirement for your course.

Quite an application based unit that challenges you to think beyond the course to link concepts to real world issues. I enjoyed the field trip that encouraged me to think critically while engaging with the syllabus. Assignments are pretty easy too, aided by a fantastic and helpful lecturer and of course, PASS! The exam did seem a bit confusing, but if you attend the lectures and really enjoy the unit, it should be easy. Overall, I recommend this subject to future students.

Content and concepts are incredibly interesting. The way they are taught is.... less so. I got a lot out of this subject during independent research (major essay, finding case studies for the exam) where I could take these great models and patterns we'd "learnt" about and apply them myself. Doing well in tutorials is very possible. Wording of exam questions made it difficult for me to show that I had a solid understanding of all the theoretical frameworks covered in the unit. Not a lot of scope in exam to show how different concepts relate either... but heaps of room to really engage with subject material during major essay and field trip. Also, if unit is done same way in future, the economic geography lecture (Week 11, done by guest lecturer) is amazing. It is the way the rest of the unit should be taught.

I did this unit solely to get a HD. The in-semester tasks were very easy and I attained almost full marks for all of them. The exam however is where I think most people in the cohort got screwed over. I understood and answered every question, yet only attained 55% for the exam. I went in and spoke to my coordinator over my exam script and she told me that the average for the exam was actually 40%. She then looked at some of my answers in my script book and told me that she would have marked me substantially higher, but changing of marks is not allowed. Basically we were given very little indication of what was expected of us in the exam. I answered questions correctly but because the answers weren't EXACTLY what they were after, I lost several marks. IF YOU WANT A HD DON'T DO THIS UNIT. I gave it 2 stars because I did actually find the content interesting and the workload during the semester is fairly light.
