I just personally hate this unit. The assignments were harshly marked, lectures had too much 'extra' information that weren't necessary for the exam. I could not tolerate some of the lecturers, one spent half a lecture for several weeks talking about their research and personal life. To be fair, the content was light and the exam was MCQ.

This unit was BORING for me and the first few assessments kinda shook me. It took me a while to get into the groove of this unit and it was my worst mark this year. The lecturers devote quite a bit of time at the end towards revision and they give you some hints about the style of questions on the exam so stay aware. Please go to the tutorials (particularly biostats)even though they’re not compulsory because I know you want to be a good student. Also Basia is really nice and Penny is super cute and inspiring as a person. I would recommend watching lectures on double speed because they’re quite dry. This subject is quite different content-wise to other biomedicine units at Monash. The lecturers really put in a lot of effort to help you understand the main concepts which underlie epidemiology and biostatistics. Lectures can be a little long and dry sometimes, but makes up for the interesting content being taught. Non-compulsory tutorials are definitely worth attending as many of the concepts being examinable are elaborated in tutorials, (tutorials can be a bit boring occasionally). The assessment tasks weren't too bad, the mid-semester and end-semester multiple choice quizzes were quite challenging in the time given, make sure you really know the content being taught. Also put effort in the assignments in biostatistics as they worth quite a lot for the unit and marking is quite harsh. The exam was fairly straightforward, make sure you fully understand the concepts being taught in lectures AND TUTORIALS, not just simply memorising concepts as that won't help in the exam much. A lot of trick questions in the exam, so be careful. Just put in the effort in learning and understanding the concepts, clarifying with lecturers and tutors (who are more than willing to help you out), and a great mark is definitely promising in this unit!

Not a very content heavy unit but does have its own set of challenges. Tutorials are definitely worth attending as they cover much of the lecture content in good detail. Assesments may be somewhat confusing but if you put in the effort, a good grade is definitely achievable.

One of the enjoyable subjects where content isn't too heavy and is delivered eloquently and diligently by the thoughtful unit coordinator. Apart from a 2-hour lecture there are non-compulsory tutorials that cover lecture material that are worth attending.

Very different style of content to other Biomed Core units. VCE health is an advantage for the epidemiology component. Non-compulsory tutorials are definitely worth attending; assessable content not found elsewhere is provided. The coordinators are really involved and will make the extra effort for you!
