** If you have little to no experience coding I highly recommend taking a course on JavaScript from Codecademy trust me ** Lecturer is kinda passive aggressive. Subject isn't taught very well. Attending things over zoom was a nightmare because of the minority of students who lack computer literacy. I ended up only attending the practicals/labs since they were assessed. I have prior experience with web development so content was a cake walk for me and I didn't bother to watch the lectures because of it.

Javascript is completely unused in both university and corporate life.

It’s kind of a really strange unit. Really really strange. It is apparently designed for people with no prior coding experience but how untrue that is. From week 1 it was soo tough, they try to teach you how the web and web apps work and how you can manipulate APIs and use GIT. Unit goes really fast paced and you barely get time to learn how to code. Unless your dedicated and know what’s going on then I think you will be good and ALSO pray that you have an IT team member then you will be all set for the really difficult projects. I just don’t get why this unit is compulsory for students who have no intention of majoring in software or electrical eng. only plus side is exam is all theory and easy.

I loved this unit as a first-year student, but I did feel like it went too fast for people who were new to programming. Expecting complete beginners to navigate the Google Maps API seemed a little too optimistic. Nevertheless, it is definitely a fun unit if you have some experience in coding, and also a good way to figure out if you want to choose Software Engineering as your specialisation.

Useless

My best first year eng unit score by far, but most hated subject. Fine with the basics but the assignments were ten times harder than taught content, the exam didn't have any coding which is a major positive and was basically just on weeks 8/9 -12 lecture content.

An odd unit that trys to teach the design process of the user interface of an app or software product. While it doesn't assume prior programming knowledge, it is deliberately set up to get students writing simple web apps in teams. Be prepared to also learn many different work ethics of other students studyin first year engineering!

To those who has never done any coding. Either git gud or find that one carry who doesn't mind teaching and stick to that person like a leech. They will save you when it's time for assignments and for exam. If you've done basic coding before and understand the logic process or basic syntax, it shouldn't be too hard. This unit requires extensive usage of Google and reading through heaps of technical jargon. But it's doable!

I thought as an introduction to web development programming (html, css, JavaScript), this is a very beneficial subject. Michael the lecturer is very good and very thorough, his lectures were very informative. You should have no trouble at all with this if you're familiar with web development (or any exposure to programming at all), however it may be tough if you're entirely new to programming.
