Reviews
reiterate everything in the below negative reviews. honestly think they dont even bother looking at the SETU survey feedback. the arrogance of the coordinators in that sense. Particularly David Toleman. i also think there should be a high level university inquiry into this unit to overhaul it and the teaching approach. they basically claim the teaching approach and structure is based on "student led learning" which for them must mean, give barely any forward or post feedback and give cryptic unclear answers to questions. total BS because this unit requires strong guidance, tutelage and answers to bloody questions so we can learn. The level of work in this unit is that of a 3rd year not a 2nd. and its like they expect you to understand and do the work of a marketer with 10 or 20 years experience. Not accounting or caring for the fact that the students doing this unit and the assessments are engaging in and learning all these concepts/tools for the first time! All the assessments are interlinked. build on each other. best advice, if you get an interesting industry to research then try to make it interesting and align your mindset to be curious. that should help get through the gruel. and be an open team player. the 2nd assessment is group bases and BIG load of work to do. I recommend actually staying up to date with lectures, readings and tutes (which allow you to practice the tools/concepts) otherwise its near impossible to survive this unit. theres alot of parts to the assessments, particularly #2, so start early as possible and work as a team. the last assessment is a bit of a joke cause its about strategic recommendations based on the 2nd assessment findings but they dont really give you any prior tutelage about formulating or creating strategic recommendations, so i felt i was kind of winging that one. if you have to do this unit. i cant stress this enough, try to do it in the semester that Paul Murphy is coordinating it. He is better, nicer and more understanding (particularly if you've got Special Consideration issues) than the other coordinator David Toleman. So this may make unit coordination and feedback a little better, more human i suppose, but overall i dont think it'll make much difference in assessment work. GOOD LUCK!!!

Tutors were pretty good. You get the chance to work on parts of the assignment as part of the tute, so that’s a good resource. Unit coordinator was a nightmare, seems to be a severe lack of communication between him and tutors about expectations for assignments. He doesn’t give anyone a straight answer when they post questions about the assignment, just gives a condescending and dismissive response, telling them to check the instructions (even though the answer isn’t there). Would not recommend this but it’s unfortunately required for the marketing major.

shittiest class. shouldn't have taken it, now do yourself a favour and don't take this unit mate

Worst uni coordinator ever! Changed the assignment so much from previous years it became almost impossible to complete. We weren't allowed to use major databases and when you ask him questions he refuses to answer any. This unit used to be an EASY HD in previous years but BEWARE. HE will have you calculating growth rates and macro trends over the next five years and information not taught in class and when you ask for help he refers you to the library. Assignments were based on a niche industry with almost no info available on the internet. Lecturer and tutors are not on the same page. I asked the lecturer how to do something and had regular consults but the tutor marked this as being incorrect and the lecturer backflipped on our previous conversations and also said this wasn't correct despite him telling me to do it a particular way. You can barely contact the tutors as they say they have to work at other unis and can only respond to emails on one day. The tutors interpret the assessment differently to the lecturer which causes major problems. Despite accurately doing the assignment based on this niche industry, I scored lower marks than people who photoshopped graphs to make the cosmetic industry look like the organic cosmetic industry (which has barely any info available). and used the wrong industry data. These people got high HDS and we were told to use their assignments to form our group assignment. Despite their assignments being totally opposite of what the lecturer wanted. Rude lecturer called David who swears and makes rude remarks and comments at students, has a temper and is very organised. All of this makes the unit workload 10 x more than what it needs to be and you end up with poor grades. WORST UNIT I HAVE EVER TAKEN AT MONASH. VERY POORLY RUN.

This unit is the worst! Even though I got D overall, I still disliked the way the unit was structured. Three assignments were heavily linked (and consisted of 70% of your final grade). If you do bad on the first one (30%), expect to do poorly on the other two (20% each). Tutors' feedback on the three assignments were not helpful and it didn't feel relevant nor helpful to the other consequent assignments. I put in the most work for this assessment and I did not even feel like I got the mark I deserved. Many students say that they also had the same struggle. It's not worth doing this unit. Every time I think of doing this unit and learning the content, I just want to scream so badly because it is HELL.

Horrendous unit, really bad group assignment design + review system, assignment rubric was unclear and assignment feedback marking was inconsistant as well. I tried to get more feedback regarding why on certain sections were marked poorly even though it addressed the marking rubric and the responses didnt even try to explain it. (Just said stuff like the feedback is not for discussion what does that even mean??) SETU closed 2 weeks before the last 2 assignments were marked (what a fucking joke) and the "remark" of my assignment didnt provide any new feedback, they just slapped on another random lecturer's name and said it was remarked. Its pretty sad that the reviews from 3 years ago are still relevent, such as only being able to use IBIS world as a reference and writing about an extremely new industry in Australia makes it almost impossible to find any "credible" sources of information. Lecture and tutorial notes are horrible organised especially in the sections about customer and competitor analysis where even my other units explained better as a sub-topic, and alot of the skills "required" for the assignments are not even taught properly. I had to put in DOUBLE the hours then my other units which I got HDs for to try and piece the content together and relearn the majority of the concepts from other units/sources but I still got a bad grade.

The unit was alright but the group assignment was hard to coordinate.

One of the worst units I have studied so far! The unit coordinator was academically inept, to say the least. I understand having someone teach a unit based on having substantial industry experience is beneficial for students, however, in this case, I felt as though there was no added value. Even the content that was taught was regurgitated from Marketing Theory and Practice, so you are pretty much stuck with learning nothing new. In-class workshops were just as bad as the group assignment. If you are stuck with incompetent and unmotivated group members, good luck on receiving a good score regardless of your effort. This is my first ever review for a unit and all I can say is DON'T DO IT.

IT'S A TRICK! EASY HD! NOPE! The new unit coordinator has made things more "INDUSTRY" appropriate and expects that we do the job of a PHD student while researching. You can't use IBIS where everything is available and most of the easy things are BANNED. When you ask a question, we get referred to 658.8 and the tutors don't reply to emails as they work one-day a week. I had my tutor delegate my email to the other who then said sorry I don't reply to emails on Thursday and Friday.

pretty fun unit!
