This subject goes through the history of photography as a medium in China, focusing on different historical influences on the medium each week. It was incredibly interesting to learn the effect that photography has had on China, including through propaganda and art photography. There were many readings and the assignments weren't easy, but feedback given by the tutor Genevieve was very helpful. This subject has a strong focus on analysis of real objects, being able to see film cameras, photography books and other important photographic memorabilia, which was refreshing after often only seeing images of artworks to analyse. There were many students who were previously inexperienced with art history who found this subject interesting and manageable, so a previous knowledge of art history and art analysis is helpful but not required, if you happen to be interested in this subject.
