Reviews

Score: H1. Amazing subject taught by several lecturers, including the subject coordinator Diana! We had 3 assignments, one was a SAQ style, one was a group oral presentation, and another one was a short essay (paper review. based on the paper you chose for the oral presentation). There were also 2 MSTs, in which all were MCQs. To be fair, some of the questions were hard as they were application based (especially Diana's modules), but I think it is still possible to achieve H1 if you keep on track with the lectures prior to the workshop. Also, the exam was 120 minutes with 120 marks (all SAQs) and some people were not able to finish the exam (I barely finished it too). However, I believe that as long as you fully understood the materials (and not merely doing rote memorisation) and come to the tutorials, you shouldn't have too much issues on the exam. I believe that the score might be scaled as well, although I am not too sure. Overall, although the were heaps of contents to go through every week, I truly enjoyed this subject! Lecturers were very responsive on Ed discussion, and assessments were fair. Definitely recommend people to take this subject!

I took this subject as a core for my major (cell & developmental biology) and it has been probably one of the best subjects I've taken at uni. Kind of surprised that the cohort was so small (~80 I think?) but hopefully my comments encourage more people to take this subject in the future. I found the lecture content (plants included!) really interesting and delivered in a logical and engaging manner. There were also a few guest lectures (examinable) which put what we were learning at the time into a world context/bigger picture which was awesome. There is a lot of assessment (3 x MSTs, a scientific paper review and end of semester exam) but don't let that scare you away. It helps you to stay on top of things and learn skills (the paper review especially) so by the time the exam comes around you should be able to go in there and give it your best.
