Reviews
told myself that once ive completed this subject, i would head straight to studentvip and do a review. by far the worst subject i've ever done in my arts degree. while it certainly was interesting to learn about criminology through film, the subject structure was just a huge mess in general. lectures were messy and poorly organised, tutorials were worse (at least in my experience with isabel). the essay briefs that we were given for our two assignments were extremely vague and weren't even discussed properly during the tutorial time that we were given. perhaps this would have been a better experience for those doing a major in criminology but to those who aren't majoring/minoring in criminology, maybe you might want to steer away from this subject and especially isabel as a tutor.

This subject was so refreshing in the midst of theory heavy Criminology subjects. The two essays gave you a lot of creative freedom whilst requiring you to incorporate criminology theory and film analysis together, but if you are interested in film and can generally understand how it affects the way society perceives crime then you'll have no trouble linking them in your analysis. Flynn was also a great lecturer. This is definitely my favourite subject I've taken in my entire Arts degree. My grade was a high H1.

I took this subject thinking that it would be my favorite subject in my entire course, as I major in crim and have taken several film/screen studies subjects before. I could not have been more wrong. After slaying every single crim and film subject I have taken over the past 2 years and raking in the H1s I was mortified to see my 75 final grade in CRIM30006 staring back at me. I truly have no idea how the reviews for this subject are so positive because I genuinely struggled to do well despite the work I put in. The lecture content is generally pretty dry and does not go into much detail regarding the complex relationship between film theory and criminology. This was very disappointing considering the standard that they expect students to write at. It seemed like we had a lot of creative freedom in writing the assignments, however it was extremely difficult to balance the research component of the essay, incorporate all of the key theories of the subject, and still present a nuanced and original argument in 2000 words. I spent so much time even thinking of a cultural artifact that would work with the vague instructions of the assignments, which demand the same structure of analyzing 'genre, narrative, discourse' for both. The assignment feedback itself was even more vague - along the lines of 'you did this part perfectly, but I would've liked to see more. You drew on relevant materials from the subject, but you should've done so more.' Seemed like such a simple fix and I tried to apply this feedback to the second essay but my grade didn't improve. Idk if I'm just dumb and I'm missing some key holy grail that would pull me the 90 that everyone has claimed to receive, or if the subject has changed, but this was probably one of my least favorite subjects in my entire degree. So disappointing and I wish I had spent my time on something else.

This subject is great, especially for 3rd year criminology students who are getting bored with their subjects. The lecturer Flynn is super nice and delivers the lectures in a way thats super interesting, even online, and the tutors are really really great too. This is one of my favorite subjects I've done in my whole degree. It feels really fresh after sort of monotonous heavily academic readings-based crim subjects so far and you get a lot of freedom to be creative in your assignments, which are actually a lot of fun to write. 100% recommend!

I picked this subject not really understanding what it would be about. It involves some film analysis in its assessments and this was completely new to me even as a criminology major. However, the content was definitely interesting and well taught. Lectures were fun to watch and the tutors/lecturer were all great! If you particularly enjoy watching the crime genre, this subject is a must!

really interesting subject and the analysis of movies make applying theories and subject themes really enjoyable. coorindated really well especially with the interruption of covid19.

This subject is a treat if you enjoy movies. Assessments require a bit of movie analysis but should focus more on the criminological implications rather than writing a review. Assessments give you a lot of liberty and the tutors are pretty open to new ideas.

Definitely worth doing if you're a criminology major. I really enjoyed applying criminological theory to film and tv. Because it's a 3rd year subject I felt very prepared for this subject. You are given a lot of freedom with the assessments. Because you can choose whichever tv/film from the list given I enjoyed writing the essays.
