Honestly, this was not what I expected from this subject. I took it as a Linguistics/French major because it could count to either, but it was very language policy heavy and quite dry. The lectures felt too long and it was unclear which information was important or just additional. The mid-semester exam was open-book and simple enough, as was the oral presentation on one of the readings, but the actual content was quite dry and more focused on law and history rather than the languages and cultures of Europe.

Good subject. Sometimes a little bit too much politics/geography/history heavy information in the lectures, but otherwise still interesting. Good option if you don’t wish to take phonology or aus indigenous languages like me.

This is legitimately the most boring subject i have ever done at unimelb. As a linguistics major i chose it in order to complete my degree as my final elective, and i regretted the decision from the first lecture. The subject content is extremely dry. Every person i spoke to felt the same. The only students that would enjoy this are people who are really into learning about european language policies or history. Do yourself a favour and choose literally ANY other linguistics elective. Never thought i'd say this but... Syntax was more interesting than this....
