Quite literally a wild subject. Only a wam boosting subject if you’re decent at writing essays (40% of your grade). Subject content is okay, though repetitive. Felt like half the subject was just antagonistic, dwelling and hating on Malthus’ theory of population growth, when it was coined in 1798 LOL. The subject is very outdated, lecture slides are 20yrs old. Main lecturer Sergio Jarillo doesn’t seem very engaged, like he’s forced to take the lectures. A lot of students fall for him bc he’s a bit buff and intentionally wears tight shirts and jeans, but by the end of the subject you’ll get over him bc he’s a boring lecturer. The other lecturer Jan Hendrik May was the BEST, he’s so lively and funny for his age. A lot of students don’t like his content bc it’s about climate change and a bit sciency, but it won’t be examined in depth. Two mapping assignments are easy, and you can get 100% for them but takes some effort (10-12hrs for each). Essay was the worst part, where you’re marked both on the content and your WRITING ABILITY. Students rarely got above 80%. Exam was online open book 25 MCQ and moderately challenging, seemed like they were testing random facts. If you copy and paste all lecture note material and have all the mandatory readings on hand you will easily score well as you have more than enough time to control F (75mins). It’s a decent subject, but only if you are interested in global hunger issues and wanna see a buff teacher obsessed with protein intake! Unique cohort with both science and arts students. Shoutout to my tutor Mia Dunphy, we even spoke about condoms in class LOL. This subject was such a wild ride!

Good subject, interesting content (can feel a bit repetitive at times) but the assignments are set out really well and very straightforward. If you are looking for an interesting, but also chill and easy subject, I would recommend this one.

Really interesting, fun and well-organised subject. The assignments were engaging, for the essay assignment there is an option to submit an essay plan and the lecturer gives you feedback, although it is optional, I highly recommend you do this as this made the essay easier to write. The assignment instructions were straight forward. For the mapping ArcGIS assignments, they provide you with extremely clear step-by-step instructions and and FAQ page which was extremely helpful. There were also Zoom meetings for extra support on the map assignments and a discussion board. Making the maps was also really interesting (especially if you're into geography or maps). The lecture content was well organised and engaging and the lecturer was always available in person during the lecture times for any questions anyone had. The exam was multiple choice and open book so it was quite easy to score well. Overall, a great subject with achievable H1 for anyone looking for an Arts elective or a breadth.

Easy class and is exceptionally well structured, additionally it seems like the tutors enjoy their jobs and are always up for a chat, it makes the class so much better.

If you want an easy H1 - I'd say this subject should be your first choice. The content was interesting and it really did gave me a lot of knowledge regarding famine and hunger. The assessments were straightforward too, including the arcGis (it might look scary but they gave us DETAILED step-by-step process so it's very much doable). Exam was really easy (but this is during COVID so it's an open-book exam) and submitting a draft for your essay will do you so much good since Wolf gave a really good constructive advice!

Easy first year subject, I watched all the lectures on 2x and did half the readings and still managed an H1. Definitely take the chance to submit a draft for the essay. The exam was really easy, will boost your grade if you don't do well on the other assignments. As long as you attend the tutorials the ArcGIS assignments will be a piece of cake.

I loved this subject! I thought it was well organised and had interesting content, although I agree with the previous poster that it can become repetitive. Wolf was a fantastic lecturer and super approachable. I thought that the assessments were very straight forward and the 2 mapping tasks didn't take long to complete. The exam was also multiple choice and open book which is great if you have concise notes with it.
