This subject was exactly what I hoped it would be. Covers Southeast Asia from late colonial period to about the end of the cold war (midpoint is WW2). Each week you generally cover one or two primary countries as a means for exploring a particular moment in time/period. Subject has a strong emphasise on primary readings. Main assessment is a research essay from an extensive list of topics that cover familiar cases seen in the subject but allow you to explore them with far more depth. Highly suggest reading a book on southeast Asia beforehand as it enriches your subject learning to know factors such as geography, weather patterns, Vietnam’s history with China, traditional gender roles etc. Books recommended for this are The emergence of modern Southeast Asia by Norman G. Owen or A history of Southeast Asia by Anthony Reid. Overall, if the title appeals to you then I believe this subject will deliver on your expectations. After this subject I so want to go explore Southeast Asia in person and learn more.

Really good subject! The lecturer/tutor Bronwyn was super nice and helpful, and clearly knew a lot about the content matter. I came in with zero background knowledge so found it all super interesting. The subject does cover a lot of things very quickly, so you do have to keep on top of readings etc. The feedback on assignments was the most detailed and helpful I've ever gotten on an arts assignment.
