Hi! I'm Geordie, and I've just completed honours in Linguistics. I finished my B-ARTS in 2023, major...
Reviews
Having interest in linguistics going into this subject I was quite disappointed. Lecturer was pretty good and fairly passionate but content overall was pretty bland. All the content was basically common sense and stuff you'd already know just explained in new fancy language (like people from different cultures may have some difficulty communicating who woulda thought). Also doesn't really go very in depth with this. The 2 assessments were kinda vague and also just weird, the first one requires you to listen to strangers conversations and take note of how language is used. If your interested in linguistics go for LING100001 over this for sure.

The lecturers were pretty interesting, but the content wasn't super new to many of us. The tutes were pretty boring and I found that we didn't really have any in-depth discussions about anything, which was a bit disappointing. The assignment guidelines were a little vague, but once you got stuck into them, the tasks made a bit more sense. There are 2 assignments, and no exam, which was a nice way to assess this subject as it's more abstract applicable knowledge than specific facts or theories. I quite enjoyed the subject, but if you're choosing a Level 1 Linguistics unit, I'd recommend taking LING10001: The Secret Life of Language over this one for a broader learning experience.

Lectures were fairly interesting. Obviously due to covid everything was moved online. Whilst my other subjects conducted zooms for tutorials, this one did not and we were restricted to discussion boards which I did not enjoy. My one tutorial in person was enjoyable though. Assignments are a tad challenging but should be able to do well.

Pretty interesting. The lectures are pretty boring and repetitive but the tuts were fun. Love the interactive nature of the assignments though - going out and collecting our own samples and data, etc. All in all, would recommend if you are new to linguistics (it's a nice easy start).
