Hi! I'm Geordie, and I've just completed honours in Linguistics. I finished my B-ARTS in 2023, major...

Reviews

This subject was quite good, although the assignments were fairly vague and boring. They involved some data collection, but guidance on how to analyse the data was pretty absent in my opinion. That being said, the final 2500 word essay is pretty free topic-wise and allows you to write on pretty much anything you like! There are a lot of interesting topics throughout the course, and if you're interested in linguistic meaning and semantics then I'm sure there'll be something in there for you. The formal logic bit was rushed when I took it, with the lecturer spending only one 50 minute lecture each on propositional and predicate logics. This was really inaccessible to anyone who hadn't studied logic before. Overall, it was pretty average.

Tutorials and lectures were not interesting

Pretty decent. Didn’t find it the most fun or interesting but that’s because I’m not really into this area much. Assignments pretty easy to do well in, apart from the section on logic which can be tough to get correct if it is new to you. Good choice if you need a subject slot to fill

Some pretty interesting linguistics topics in here. Honestly don't think I put that much effort in and still got good marks. It's fairly logical. Didn't find the lectures or tutorials particularly engaging though.

Went into it thinking it'd be average, but it's actually one of the more tolerable third year Ling subjects. Even when some topics are boring, they're not that bad. The first two assignments are good in that they relate to the content and require you to do a bit of data collection. The final essay, however... Make a note of the topics you find interesting as you encounter them, because though suggested essay questions are provided, you're better off writing about something you like. Overall, a good subject with decent lecturing.

I enjoyed this subject a lot!

First two assessments are very relevant to the content, the final essay seems to have no/very little connection to what is covered in lectures. Marked fairly overall and more logical content then some other linguistics subjects!
