Had a lot of fun with this subject, definitely my favourite one for the year! It's perfect for anyone interested in journalism, particularly with the second major assessment. The lectures were easy to comprehend, mostly common-sense sort of thing. You don't really need to take notes for this subject. I had a lot of fun in my tutorials, shout out to Laura! The peer review deadlines helped to keep everything on track and the tutorial activities and discussions were interesting enough. If you enjoy different styles of writing, you should enjoy this subject.

Very good assignments, especially for those interested in journalism. Don't need to attend lectures. Tutorials were weird, common sense topics but my tutor was emphasising on a lot of irrelevant and useless things and made up odd deadlines for pitches/drafts. Fun for writing, not fun to attend.

Loved this subject. If you're interested in journalism or any kind of media writing, this subject gives you a taste of it. The lectures (1 hour, 1 per week) are super easy to absorb, with barely any notes needing to be taken. Tutorials (1.5 hours) are really engaging and practical. I had the luxury of having the most knowledgeable, experienced and interesting tutor ever (shoutout Chris Canty). The first assignment focuses on analysing the way different publications portray the same news and the biases they hold (eg political). Folio 1 was a culinary article where you interviewed someone about their favourite recipe and was more of a profile with the recipe tucked into the piece, almost secretly, and a review where you got to choose whether you reviewed a film, album or book. Folio 2 involved a hard news story where you interviewed two people about an issue/event and reported on it objectively (basically, you have no voice) and an opinion article on ANY issue that you have authority on and feel strongly about (basically just a rant backed by sound arguments which was fun). The readings are really short, enjoyable, and I actually did them because they were all helpful/accompanied the content nicely. There are peer reviews needing to be completed to pass, which are kind of annoying because your partner might not be on time, but it's really helpful as it means you have to stay on track, and you're required to submit drafts of your work in advance which helps you to get it done early. Overall really practical and engaging subject!

Personally, I expected too much, I think. I really enjoyed the assessments, especially Folio 1 but onwards it was just a really bland subject and the course material could be better. I liked my tutorials and my tutor (Jacob) tried really hard to make it engaging, but I feel that 2 hours is too much.

personally i think it is boring, didnt really learn anything? lots of the content are common-sense. The assignments are two folios where we had to compile loads of elements (which is very bothering for me). but on a slightly positive note, a range of different writing styles are taught, eg hard news story, profile story, recipe story, etc. But, as i had said before, many of these are common sense :))

Not really what I expected. I feel like too much emphasis was placed on interviewing (3 interviews in total) especially for an intro subject. I also expected more editing and proofreading but none of this was really covered. Kinda throws you in the deep end in regards to finding stories and interviewees, especially during covid. The two folios were ok assignments.

Although the description of the subject may allure an aspiring writer/journalist to take this subject, I regret enrolling in it. The subject does have its merits - the lecturers teach you how to write each of the text types, and the relaxed and friendly nature of the tutorials is a plus. Unfortunately, the lectures cover the mere basics of the text types, and the tutorials regurgitate it (I really didn’t learn anything new conceptually). The marking standards are very harsh. It’s really a mixed bag - if you don’t have much experience with writing in text types and don’t mind an average mark, then you may have a more pleasurable experience than I did.

I would recommend choosing your tutors carefully for this subject, I was not really a fan of writing but this subject is a good sampler I guess? The tutorials are fairly fun, the lectures are okay in my opinion. I would definitely recommend to someone who wants to progress into journalism of any sort to do this subject.

Love this subject!

Such a fun and challenging subject, especially for those who likes writing or want to pursue a writing degree later on (or just writing knowledge in general). The tutorials were engaging and the lectures were very informative (even if you view it online because it is at 8am).
