Reviews

Grade: H1. A well-coordinated & interesting but content-heavy subject! Content is split into different (and logical) blocks, each with an associated practical and quiz. The quality of lectures varies by professor, but broadly they're organised well. The MSTs were tough with averages ~50-60. I found the final to be similarly difficult. As it's content-heavy, you gotta work your memory for good results, but the content itself isn't difficult - just the volume.

Really good! I took it as a a breadth and I would easily recommend! Topics were explained very well and the lecturers respond quickly to any questions. Labs were fun and an easy learning opportunity as well. The MST were quite difficult, with averages being in the 60s from what I remember, as they test on very small details in a very quick manner (think testing on something mentioned in one sentence, and you have 50 seconds to answer each Q), but the exam was disgustingly easy so it's easy to make up for the MSTs if you prepare for the exam well enough. I averaged 75 on the MSTs (2 of them), but I got a 96 on the exam so I ended with a H1. Not a WAM booster, but a very enjoyable course and a H1 is viable if you put the time and effort in.

Very well coordinated and the pracs are fantastic. My only gripe with the subject is that the assumed knowledge of immunology was far beyond what was taught in sem 1 which made some of the content very difficult to grasp.

A very interesting subject and perhaps one of the most well-coordinated subjects I've ever taken! Does have a fair bit of content, so keeping up to date is very important, but the lectures and practicals are very engaging so it doesn't feel like a mammoth effort. Would recommend for anyone even slightly interested in microbiology and/or immunology!

Loooooooved this subject!! It is very microbiology weighted, which I didn't think I'd like, but I left the subject with a new appreciation and fascination about all things micro. The subject is very well coordinated, and the fact that the practicals reflect lecture content is amazing as they help reinforce what you're learning. It is very content heavy and you do have to know a lot of small details, but I found it so enjoyable. The practicals are 3 hours every 2 weeks which almost scared me out of taking the subject, but since they're not assessed (besides a 1% pre-prac online), I felt as though I really got a chance to learn and grow my lab skills. This subject has really made me consider research as a career- loved it!

Very content heavy

Brilliant subject that covers a lot of detail in an interesting way and is very well taught. Learnt a lot of cool stuff about bacterial pathogenesis and certain diseases. It's definitely more weighted towards the microbiology side, but there is some immunology which I've found useful going into an Immunology major. Pracs could drag on a bit but on the whole were interesting

Fantastic subject! Engaging content and friendly coordinators

I found this to be a really engaging and well taught subject. Although there is a lot of content, the majority of it is pretty interesting so I didn't mind it too much. I really enjoyed learning about the different infectious agents, their symptoms of infection and how to treat them. This subject also gives you a little insight into the immune system and how it interacts with those infections. I would recommend this subject to anyone who wants to study medicine or who is interested in microbiology and immunology.

A very interesting subject, and the practical demonstrators are all very friendly and helpful. However there is a lot of content to memorise, so you must stay on top of this subject in order to do well.
