Grade: 81. This subject is really a tradeoff. With regards to content, there is only one 2 hour lecture every week. With assessments, there are 10 4-question quizzes + a big essay. The quizzes are essentially free marks by copy-pasting the transcript into chatgpt, and the correct answer is usually made very obvious. However, often the questions relate to andrew (the lecturers) personal life and stuff not on the slides, so taking the transcript and control f-ing it makes this easy peasy. Also two attempts for each quiz, with the highest mark taken, so this 40% from the quizzes are essentially handed to you. The lectures are frankly uninteresting and consist of slides ranging from 15-25 slides filled with stock photos and paragraphs. From what ive seen, andrew talks abt his personal life which makes watching the lectures unnecessary and a waste of time. So, each week, i spent maybe 30-minutes max just skimming through the lecture and completing the quiz, which is significantly (like by a factor of 10) less time-consuming than other more content-heavy subjects. This is especially good because it means that you are basically taking 3 subjects this sem instead of 4, which saves you much needed time and effort when life hits you hard. This is where the better parts of the subject end though. The essay is incredibly open ended which is both a blessing and a curse. You can write abt anything related to business and music, but you are not given any drafts or any indication of whether you are on the right track. Ive always felt like i was a strong writer, but I received a much lower mark than i expected for this "wam booster" compared to my other more difficult subjects. Now, i wont try to defend myself but the subjective nature of the essay means that there is much more uncertainty as to your final mark than if you chose smth more objective. But one could also argue that given the tiny amount of time spent on this subject compared to others, one cant rly complain. Overall, pretty boring content, unnecessary lectures, very very easy quizzes, and a huge time- and energy-saver. But also vague marking, no feedback, and higher uncertainty compared with other subjects. So its a tradeoff. Retrospectively i still think that it was worth it due to the time it saved me which made this semester so much smoother, but it was shocking to receive a grade i felt was not what i expected. ALSO, the uni is moving to more "secure" assessments which may involve an oral component (as with music mind and wellbeing), which is something to keep in mind.

Received an 89. Not a bad subject, like others have said pretty overrated. A good WAM booster if you're able to sufficiently answer the quiz questions by looking at the lecture transcript where, bear in mind, Andrew (the lecturer) tends to yap a lot. None of the questions posed by other students related to the essay/subject/quizzes were answered on the LMS and only answered during the lecture so keep that in mind. You could pick any topic for your essay so my best advice is to structure each paragraph according to the topic covered in the lectures and link that back to the rubric (be precise!). I enjoyed writing my essay but I felt indifferent about the majority of lecture content (barring a minority). However, this was definitely an easy-going subject to take and manage, particularly if your workload from compulsory subjects/electives is high.

BOM. Yeah not bad, definitely one of the WAM booster subjects. The lecturer is pretty funky which makes the weekly zooms engaging but they go forever. Usually the 2 hours ends up feeling like 4. Quizzes wise, weekly again based on the lecture content but half of the time its really simple questions. Being worth 40% are some of the easiest marks in uni. The essay not the greatest, I feel like most people leave it to the last minute. But if it doesnt turn out half bad you still are likely to end up with a decent overall mark. If you are decided on this or something like music psych, pick music psychology. BOM is just not that interesting and the topics are really similar/crossover a lot which begin to feel way too repeative.

Grade- 88 (H1) This subject is such a WAM/GPA booster, I did this as a breadth subject and I am I science student who’s never really done a business subject before ever. There are 10 weekly quizzes you get 2 attempts to do each quiz and there are only 4 questions per quiz. All 10 quizzes are worth 40% total. Make sure you maximise you marks for these quizzes, try get 100% on each of them. I never watched the lectures, Andrew literally just reads off the slides and rants on about his life for 90% of the lecture. Some of the quiz question have questions that refer directly to what Andrew says in the lecture which is not on the slides for example “what song did Andrew play in the lecture”. Try to get ahead as much as you can meaning do the quiz the day its released especially if your doing other content heavy subject, get it over and done with. The lectures are like 2 hrs long which is so unnecessary cause it’s a drag and can easily be condensed. Most of the time I just had a look at the lecture slides before hand to do the quiz. The essay is like 2300 words, so choose are essay topic you are passionate about, it makes it so much easier to write and research. I talked about evolution of traditional to digital marketing strategies. I wouldn’t recommend leaving this essay last minute since the essay is very time consuming. The essay is worth 60% of the grade. I mean the subject overall is not that interesting it’s boring but easy to do well in. I also found it really hard to reach the word limit especially after editing my essay.

Not a bad subject, but overrated. Content-wise, not really my thing but I believe many people do find it interesting, so I'm not gonna make comments on that. The quizzes are pretty easy and accounts for 40% of the whole grade, therefore made it a WAM booster. The final essay however, was marked harshly, at least for me. I don't get how people saying that they rushed it out in one night and ended up getting 80%+, maybe it's just me:( Good thing about it is that you can pick almost anything you want to talk about, which you can easily pick some straight forward topics (Which I did but idk why I didn't do well as I did put quite a lot efforts in). My final grade is 79, one point away from H1, I did ask some others who also did this subject, some are also at 79, I did suspect that some students were purposely gate-kept away from H1, but again, it could just be my problem entirely haha.

Quizzes are not easy, they will actually test if you watched through the whole lectures as the transcription is not always accurate. But you get 2 shots at the quiz. Andrew Watt is the funniest and most raw lecturer you’ll ever meet, he will literally swear and show his dog which is a nice change up. The essay requires a decent amount of work, but you can choose your own topic. Start ASAP and do not leave it till SWOTVAC, otherwise it won’t be your wam boosting subject. Super chill, but you’ll retain nothing from the subject. Do it bc you want to understand more about the music industry, it’s not worth it as a breadth its more likely a business class than a music one.

Biggest wam booster ever. Quizzes are so easy to get full grades. Essay was annoying to write since I didnt care for it, but just write about any fun topic like Kpop and its easy to score H1.

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2024

Quite easy-going, the lectures are really interesting and present on a wide range of aspects of the music industry. The quizzes make for an easy bit of your grade, however the essay at the end will be a huge drag if you're not interested in music business. Although I did well, it was genuinely painful writing a 2400 word essay on copyright since it involved reading legal documents which are possibly the most boring pieces of writing known to man. My tip for future subject-takers: pick something you know you can write about and you'll be fine.

Grade: 87 (H1). If you are looking for an easy H1 wam booster with minimal effort. This is the subject to do. There is a weekly quiz every week (10 in total) that is 4 multiple choice questions which you can use ctrl+f on the lecture slides to find the answer and this is a free 40% of your grade. Meaning the other 60% you only need a 70 for a H1 overall. The final assessment is a 2300 word essay which is due at the end of the semester (usually end of first week of exam period). You can research about any topic related to the course. In terms of marking as long as you follow the rubric and put in effort it is quite easy to do well especially if you aced the quizzes like I did. There is only 1 2-hour recorded lecture every week that I did not watch at all. I did the entire essay the night before it was due and still pulled out a good grade. However, this final assessment does require most of your effort as there is a lot of writing and research required but I was able to do it without any knowledge and submitted it last minute (literally). So take this as a breadth if you are looking for a bludge subject.

Take this subject if you want an easy H1. 40% of your final mark is 4 multiple choice questions per week on the lecture content and the lecturer is an easy marker. The content is also ridiculously easy and really the only expectation of you the entire semester is to do your quizzes and hand in your final assignment as the 2-hour lecture is the only class per week and is not mandatory to attend. I put in about 20 minutes to this class per week: 15 minutes to read through the lecture powerpoint and 5 minutes (if that) to do the quiz. Drawbacks, however, are that the lecturer literally just uses this subject to gloat about the D-List celebrities that he's met and that is all you will hear about all semester. The lecturer was very unorganized and frequently had no idea what was going on. When he first talked to us about our final assignment, someone asked when it was due and to that he responded "what do I look like, a diary?" and preceded to tell the person to find it on canvas despite there being no information about the assignment up on canvas at that time. Lecturer tried very hard to come off as "the cool lecturer that doesn't care" but often times just looked like an arse. Would still take this subject again knowing what I know now, simply because of how easy it is and how little time is required for it.
