Reviews

Overall, a subject with a very high workload. For every single drug, the molecular cellular mechanism of action, as well as adverse side effects and the reasoning for use needed to be fully understood. The subject was very well organised, and the lecturers and organisers were lovely. Only downside is how incredibly content heavy each lecture slide is. Sometimes a lecture would contain an amount of information equal to three lectures in other subjects. Multiple choice questions are quite straightforward, but they are quite strict with short answers. They require an immense amount of precise information to award one full mark, and given the large scope of the content, resulted in a 64% average for the cohort in the MST. Grades got scaled up by 2% at the end of the semester, so I would say a H1 would require a decent amount of work. I did actually enjoy the subject on the rare occasion I was fully caught up with the lecture content and could attend the lectures and workshops in person, and its pretty useful for just knowing how the most commonly used drugs work, but I can’t say it was the easiest H1 I got. I would recommend taking this subject with BCMB20002 as there was a great overlap in the content.

Mixed feelings…some lectures were too much content like toxins and GIT. Practice exam similar to actual exam SAQ. Practice exam no MCQ. Actual exam MCQ kind of hard, some niche details so definitely rewatch the GIT lecture. MST was alright, predictable questions. Prac quizzes were alright too, do the graph properly for prac 1. Also exam definitely tests practicals like they said in the exam tip lecture, so revise practical slides. Some interesting content, but it was definitely a very content heavy subject, and lecturers don’t really reply to Ed questions, so try to have a good study group. Also focus more on drug classes than drug names, and know MOA and side effects. For the content quizzes they were honestly alright so don’t worry too much

My favourite subject by far as a second year biomed student. Content was well explained with the lecturers being very well versed and interested in their fields. Would highly recommend!

Very typical bioscience subject in terms of level of content and the way that you have to regurgitate it. Pracs were uninteresting, MST was very easy although you had to be efficient with your time.

Very interesting subject, the content was occasionally challenging but not discouraging. My biggest issue was I found the online pracs hard to follow, but the TAs were very helpful in explaining any misunderstandings. The workshop quizzes were not too hard, and the MST was alright but very long which lead to a fairly low average. The exam was very fair and was similar to the practice questions provided on Canvas. A H1 is very achievable if you put in the effort to keep on top of the content, anki proved to be very useful for this subject.

Quite an interesting and easy subject content-wise, especially if you have done physiology before. Lectures weren't too difficult to follow each week and coordinators were active on discussion boards. There were 2 online pracs which were a bit boring but overall pretty useful when it came to consolidation. Exam was fair imo, however many of us found the MST too long (class average was 65) which made getting a H1 an uphill battle.

helpful subject. And quite fun. :)

If rote learning is your thing, this is the subject for you. 157 drug mentioned and you are expected to know the name, mechanisms, side effects and be able to justify their use. Most of the lecturers are fantastic, particularly Khami and Michelle (who coordinate the subject). I would recommend that you do a semester of biochemistry and a physiology subject before this one as that knowledge really helped me. I found the content really interesting and the explanations were great but you need to keep on top of the content and it can be easy to fall behind. The exam was fair but because it is short I felt a bit sad that I'd learned about so many only to be tested on like 30ish. None of the questions covered in the workshops were even remotely covered to the final exam but they give a good idea of the types of questions asked. The workshop quizzes are essentially free marks and you get 5% for just handing in pracs sheets (regardless of what your answers were) so you get 20% free marks. Mid semester exam was tough but fair and the practice quizzes are pretty straight forward. Should be a fairly achievable H1 if you put in the effort to memorise all the drugs.
