Smaller class, only physics majors and the assignments and labs more resembled later year physics courses.

Like PHYS1131, PHYS1241 extends use of problem solving skills. The course moves faster than PHYS1231, covering quantum mechanics in addition to the streams covered by PHYS1231 (Optics, thermal physics, and electromagnetics). Thermal physics is important for mechanical, civil, renewable, aeronautical, and other engineers that will go on to study thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, advanced thermofluids, and computer aided thermofluids. Electromagnetics is obviously useful for electrical engineers. Optics is useful for many fields in science and engineering, such as biology, biomedical engineering, medicine, optometry, and telecommunications.
