Going in to the course, I was worried because of the negative reviews on here, however, I actually found this subject to be quite interesting and particularly enjoyed the case studies as they were applicable to the real world. I only attended 1 lecture and viewed the rest online, however, Siobhan is a great lecturer and you can tell that she is incredibly passionate about teaching policy. She's also extremely friendly and is enjoyable to listen to. I also didn't find it necessary to listen to every single lecture as there are only 2 essay-based assessments that focus on content covered in a particular week. I personally found the concepts to be relatively straightforward and easy to understand as it is mostly basic politics. Assessments were relatively easy to score good marks in, as long as you understood the concept and knew how to use case examples to back up your essay. I ended up with a HD without doing extensive study and because there is no final exam. Only downside to the course was the fieldwork component which I personally found to be kind of pointless, especially since it's not marked; however, it counts as 2 tutorials so you can miss out on a few tutes without any issues.

A compulsory subject for me which I didn’t really enjoy. Was very dry, tutorials didn’t really help and the lecturer kind of just rambled. In the end I just downloaded slides. Definitely get Haigh’s book- I found it so helpful it clearly explained things that the lecturer just rambles over. The book also helps for the essays which you should start early.

Very boring. Content confusing if you don't know basic definitions. Lectures just seem to ramble on.

SRAP1000 is a mandatory course for many degrees such as social work, criminology and social research and policy. Unfortunately yes, it is boring and tedious as previous comments have stated. However, everyone is different ofcourse and it is a good idea to look at the course outline to get a gist of it. Personally i found that it was reallyyy boring and HARD (especially for first years like me). However this course was mandatory for me, and if i had a choice i would not have chosen it, would not really recommend it unless you believe you will have a passion for it.

A terrible subject to have in your first semester of uni. Lectures were extremely boring and tutorials were not helpful at all. SRAP1000 should not be part of a Social Work degree.

Only 3 assignments but they are heavily weighted. The guest lectures at the end of semester are interesting but generally the topics are quite dry. Tutorials could be more engaging, as all you do every week is read, analyse and discuss an article relevant to that week's lecture topic.
