New subject. Can be quite challenging, as it focusses on a sub-discipline/cross-disciplinary field ('material culture studies') and so is not strictly an Art History subject (more like a mixture of Art History and Anthropology, with a bit of Archaeology and a Cultural Studies/Sociology-type aspect to it; you choose which of these your work will involve to a greater or lesser degree by the type of object you select to research and how you choose to go about it, there is a ton of flexibility). The 'object analysis' on the unit outline is actually a live talk (ie, public-speaking) which is definitely not everyone's preferred assignment format. Positive aspect for me was spending a whole semester working on one object (all the assignments involve slightly different outputs that focus on one object that the student selects), so put a bit of time into choosing this object wisely and the research process should be enjoyable for you.
