Terrible subject. No correlation with the real business world as much as they sell it as such. If I could give it zero stars I would. Complete waste of time, money and all other resources.

Very harshly marked assignments that don't reflect real business situations. The theory is useless and redundant

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2024

This subject sucks, it is hard to do well in and the content is just silly at times.

as much as it sucks there is no way around this unit if you're doing BCom. just be prepared to get marked pretty harshly on the individual assignment and the subjective nature of this unit. put in your best work but don't set your expectations too high. most people don't do well in this unit either so don't be too hard on yourself if you don't get the marks you want. it'll get better from here.

Shit subject that has no place in the BCom at Sydney, very poor teaching, theory is bull shit and not at all relevant to the real world or the rest of the degree and for a first year, first semester subject the marking without justification is very harsh and vague

ABOLISH IT!!!!!

This subject was a fantastic WAM killer!

In all respects this has to be the worst course I have taken in my entire academic career. Firstly, lets talk about the content of the course itself. It is highly redundant, theoretical, and a vaguely outlined set of common business theories. Mostly useless and really just a hassle to sit through the online component (which is supposed to teach you anything, but its so useless that practically no one touches it). Next, the assignments in this course are also a total crapshoot. Expectations are practically never outlined outside of passing remarks made by the tutor (the course coordinator) in my situation. Everything about the marked components of this course are vague, poorly explained and extraordinarily harshly marked for what they are. Most of them require theoretical application, but the teachers WILL complain that there is a lack of depth in said application of the taught theories, with the main problem being the theories were never really thoroughly taught at all. This is on top of the fact most of the theories are not even relevant in this day and age and pretty outdated, making them difficult to apply in the first place. The tutorials themselves are also a total mess. The tutors do absolutely no teaching in the 2 hour tutorials and most of them consist of students trying to discredit each other for participation marks. In my case, the tutor was so unpleasant that it was a struggle to participate in the tutorials. Another issue is how one of the marks in this subject is from a group presentation. It is a total diceroll how hardworking and communicative of a group you will get in this regard, and, with the harsh marking in mind, also makes for a thoroughly unpleasant experience if you get unlucky and end up with a bad group. Lastly, the most grating part of this course is the teaching quality. For a top tier university the teaching quality was absolutely dismal. Tutors put no effort into actually teaching the content or helping the students understand theories. This seems to be the universal experience across all the tutors. Feedback given is vague and condescending and does not actually contribute to helping students improve. For instance, for the tutors took 2 whole months to mark the final assessment, but the feedback I received only consisted of a single sentence. Did it really take TWO months to write that useless piece of feedback?! To summarise, this is an awful course and students should be aware of avoiding it at all costs. It is unknown how a course of this quality is allowed to be taught at USYD and it truly made for a disappointing impression of how this university teaches content in the business school. If I could have left a 0 star review, I would have.

They give vague explanations on how to complete the first assignment then proceed to mark extremely harshly despite it being a first-year subject. Content gets boring at times and tutorials are literally an arena where the same bunch of people race to answer questions first, robbing other classmates of chances to talk. Truly a mystery how this subject hasn't been revamped yet.

Subjective marking and too vague explanations for how to actually achieve what they want in an assignment. Tutorials consist mostly of people fighting each other for participation marks.
