Really enjoyed this course. It takes you through the history of economic thought, starting with Adam Smith all the way to contemporary political economy. Teaching is great, very manageable readings and no exams

Didn't really enjoy the course at the time but learning about the different schools of economic thought has been helpful for general knowledge etc.

Very well structured and insightful into different schools of economic thought. There were no final exams (which was great!) and the essays really allowed one to hone in their research skills, explore topics of interest (there was a selection to choose from) and gain more insight into the economics of society at large! Bonus - 20% of quizzes whose answers could be found from lecture slides!

with no disrespect to lynne her structure of this course is shocking, a family friend did ecop1001 a few years ago and the lecture slides were essentially the same - there is no progress (despite forcing us to fill out a course survey). Also readings/lectures focus mainly on the history of pol econ and 1 or 2 features of that economic school - so essays are very research intense which can be fun but I do think for a first year subject its workload is unnecessary and it's just silly to have lectures and readings that are no help with assignments that require a lot of in-depth knowledge and specifics. Whilst the marking is good and it's pretty easy to do well, it's not very enjoyable but I'm glad I stuck with ecop though as ecop1003 is one of the best courses I have done at usyd

I initially enjoyed this course until I realised it was completely one-sided and leftist. It literally teaches complete falsities of economic events and theory. You use a book called "23 Things they don't tell you about Capitalism" which basically says it all... They seem to love to go crazy on the imperfections of capitalism and how some aspects are theoretical and unrealistic yet act as if Marxism works perfectly in practise, which we all know is the opposite of the truth. If you want a semester of propaganda on the apparent disaster that is capitalism and the perfect economic system that is Marxism... then this course if for you. If you actually want to learn objective truths about schools of economic thought then you'll be thoroughly disappointed. Overall, an interesting topic ruined by complete delusional, communist fruit loops.

Bit left leaning but I think that's a given - you are in ECOP not ECON. Pretty interesting and not super hard either.

I don't know what the people who feel this course is pro-Marxist are talking about. It touches on most schools of economic thought, with the lecturers explaining the reasoning behind each economic theory. The lecturers and tutors also encourage argument and the study of the pros and cons of each theory, emphasising that none is perfect. In my experience, it doesn't matter which way you argue, as long as your argument is balanced and backed up with plenty of legitimate evidence, you'll get great marks. That's why I'm giving this course 9/10 rubber chickenss.

If you want to look at the historical/political side of economics, then this course is for you. Although the lecturer can be boring, the content itself is interesting. Learning about Adam Smith, Marx, Keynes etc gives a nice perspective. Tutorials are also very thought provoking. Assignments may be a bit challenging. Overall, 7/10 would recommend.

Not bad - not amazing. Nice history and overview of economic thought. The HJ Chang book is great. While regular Econ just assumes neoclassical economics is correct, this subject tries a little to hard to convince you it's not, and that Marx is right and you should join the revolution...
