The unit tries to bite off way too much content in one go. It's understandable, because as a 1000 level unit they want us to have it as a baseline for the following more specific units, but it just gives you a lot of whiplash. Especially because each week is basically a new decade of contemporary history, but the readings are so hyper-specific that you lose sight of the greater themes. The unit is also marked really harshly for a 1000 level course. I took both this course and a 2000 level unit at the same time, and got a HD on my 2000 level essay while only getting a credit on this one. I don't know why they mark so harshly if its an introductory unit which has no prerequisites or assumed knowledge. The lecturer is also very well-intended and nice when you email him, but can be awkward and a his voice is a bit monotone during lectures. In general, the unit is way too jam-packed with information from all of Europe (geographically spanning on covering events from Spain to Turkey), so its best summarized, once again, by saying *it gives you whiplash.*

An okay unit. Doesn't go into much depth at all about the twentieth century (briefly touches on major events - e.g. WWII was covered in only one lecture) so it felt like you were only getting a superficial understanding. Lecturer was fun and passionate but the readings were ridiculous - on average, 3 chapters (60 small-font pages of dry historical analysis) plus additional documents per week. Had to submit two questions per week for the readings which added to the unnecessarily heavy workload. First assignment and final exam weren't well explained. Wouldn't recommend if, like me, you've already studied the topic in greater depth or if you're looking for a course that will furnish you with a deep and nuanced understanding of the period

Excellent unit. Very interesting. Great feedback. Just try to attend all the lectures though cause you can miss a lot of content in an hour.
