Reviews

Honestly super mid. Having heard of psych courses at other universities and comparing them to this one, it seems decades behind. The course amounts mostly to pub trivia (which the coordinator Caleb seems to love) and a really weak-handed approach to mental illnesses that probably hasn't been updated since the 90s. If you're going into this hoping to learn about psychology in a mature, balanced way you'll probably be disappointed, and there's very, very little on offer for someone who is thinking of becoming a psychologist. Basically the course is wide but extremely shallow. It's thirteen weeks of the type of info seen on those "psychology facts" facebook pages, which is nice, but not what you want from one of Australia's best universities... On the upside it isn't challenging and doesn't require you to use critical thinking skills, just rote learning. As much as the course disappointed me I still got a distinction. So as long as you stay on top of the lectures you'll pass.

Loved the content!! Super fascinating, lectureres vary in their approaches but overall fantastic course! Would recommend!!

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2021

Interesting content but some lecturers made it boring.

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2021

A great introduction to the different areas of psychology. Much more interesting than PSYC1002 so keep at it.

Loved this unit, found it better than PSYC1001. Very interesting content, quite a lot to remember for exams but the fact that the content was interesting made it enjoyable to learn!

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2017

Not as good as PSYC1001. But still a good subject

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2017

Really interesting, however most of the time tutorials felt a bit pointless.

Probably one of the most interesting units you'll do at USYD in first year. I'm a health sci student so it's compulsory for the stream, but the content was interesting and engaging. Whatever you do, don't fall behind, and don't assume the final exam will be easy because its multiple choice. Don't get too caught up about results for the Research Report --> it normally sits at a pass average, and the bulk of the marks come from the final exam. Also, do not forget to do SONA, it's so easy to get the 5%, and don't forget to do the online quizzes, another easy 5%, those marks can push you up one whole band, so don't forget to do them! If you feel at any point you're struggling to keep up or make notes, don't feel afraid to purchase some from here. There's heaps online that achieved HDs. Good luck

More interesting than psyc1001 but if you haven't done that then it's alot more challenging. Same structure loads of content and research report. Need to study weekly to stay ontop of it all.
