Note: this course has been renamed 'Introductory Chemistry'. This was an infuriating unit. I did the online tutorials with fortnightly labs. You have one two-hour tutorial a week, in which the teacher spends most of their time answering unrelated questions about how to use MyLo or the ID card, leaving maybe twenty minutes to go over the tutorial questions we were to have done? With so little classroom time, the course is entirely carried by the textbook. I resorted to downloading problem sheets from other universitys' chemistry courses (thank you University of East Illinois!) to try to get more actual practice with the concepts we were supposed to learn. The teacher makes frequent mistakes, which has caused me immense stress when trying to work out why my maths isn't correct or why I couldn't make sense of what a question wants from me. Questions on actual past final exams have been unanswerable due to these errors, and there was even a typo on my final exam's header (semester 2 2022)! The teacher does not seem to mind the errors or badly-written questions which make no sense, saying 'they should probably change them at some point'. These also crop up on the tutorial sheets. The labs are interesting and cover important chemistry fundamentals but have uncertain end times so you might be kicked out an hour earlier than you thought with unfinished experiments. They are also not really in sync with the course content. The lab instructors were great though. Overall it feels like no-one cares about this unit. I left tutorials more confused than before due to the disorganised teaching. I have retained nearly nothing due to tutorials being wasted on inane and unrelated topics, and the absence of additional classroom opportunities. This is in sharp contrast to other units; zoology, ecology, and maths units have been fantastic. I do not feel ready for first-year chemistry, nor do I wish to continue studying chemistry at UTAS.
