Basic straightforward subject if you just want a pass, getting high marks requires a bit more effort but overall nothing too difficult. Raymond has switched to delivering content solely online so you might fall behind if you are not motivated/proactive enough. Contents are explained well in the videos and they are all available on youtube, some are pretty entertaining. Structure is a little confusing, we learned about classes and objects before conditional statements and loops. All in all, the subject will give you a good understanding of the basic programming concepts.

Really easy to nail a high score on this subject, most of the concept that are taught in the subject are really basic

This subject is pretty straight forward. Raymond Lister is a hilarious lecturer who is great fun to watch. However he does appear to struggle to actually end up conveying a lot of concepts. I stopped going to most lectures and only went because they made me laugh constantly. I would recommend that if the concepts don't come easily to you, get someone to easily explain them. Because the concepts arent hard to understand but often they just need to be explained in the right way.

Did I get almost 100% in this subject? Yes. Did I enjoy it? Kind of, not really. Professor Raymond Lister is a very knowledgeable person and great in communicating the concepts, understandable as he explains his current research is to find ways to best engage programming students. Raymond puts the lectures online for further revision as well as most of the answers. While lectures get cancelled often, he DOES attend to answer students' questions in person. Half of your final marks come from 28 java exercises which are done under exam conditions with very limited help from the tutor. The first 11 are compulsory to do to pass the subject. These are pass/fail and until you get the output of your code 100% right, you won't be able to do the next exercises. Then there is the assignment which only counts if you have already got the mentioned 50% in full. It is not compulsory to do and it is fairly difficult especially if you're new to java. The exam is 35% in total and most of it is just going to be a reproduction of the mentioned 50%. Only about 5% of the exam will be unseen stuff to set apart the better students. Biggest let-down in this subject is the condescending tutors who believe they own the universe because they can write code.

Great for people with no prior knowledge. But for people with a basic understanding of how to write code, this subject can be very easy, especially the first few weeks.

I love this subject! I never had any experience with Java before, let alone programming, but this subject really teaches you from the ground up! You'll get a strong fundamentals skill in this subject and with those, you can pretty much learn any other languages! My main interest was Networking. My main interest is Programming.
