Reviews

Unit structure: lab book (10%), lab report (10%), poster presentation (20%), workshop quizzes (10%), in-person open book exam (50%). The practical component is a 5 week lab where you express, purify, and crystallize a protein. The labs are normally 7 hours but time flies. I learnt a lot of valuable practical skills through the lab component. The lab report was difficult and didn't have much guidance. However, I learnt a lot through the struggle and I believe it was marked fairly. I also learnt a lot through preparing the research poster for the presentation session. I feel it was marked fairly as well, although there was not much distinction between what constituted a 70 and what constituted a 90. The workshops and associated quizzes are fine, but the material provided is not always useful for the exam. The exam was also quite difficult despite being open book. It is fully written response but it was very time pressured and Charlie's questions were really tricky. I assume it was made this way to even out the grade distribution. I can't say I loved this unit but I definitely learnt a lot. It is overall a good unit, just frustrating at times.
