If you still have the UC as Scott, congrats, dude is amazing in explaining and know what he is doing. Bad side is if you still have Galvin as your lecturer, you are high-key on your own. I did this unit without coming to any of the lecture, except the ones with Scott in them, because Galvin is so bad at explaining in my opinion. I also did this unit without doing much (not to say barely) prior chemistry knowledge. If you are feeling stuck on with the unit, you are not alone. I recommend reaching out to Scott for help as he is very approachable and will not make you feel stupid for weird questions (speaking from experience ;-;). I also think if you are stuck, please ask Scott first, and if the content still doesn't make sense, ask him about his PhD students, they do tutoring (shout-out to my tutor Morgan helped me from barely passing to HDs). The course is well structured with pre-labs (very easy to do), in-lab sessions require you to finish on time with an acceptable product at the end (finish with a product outside of 3 hours will minus 1 point, but if you are slow in labs, just do it slowly and carefully because they care more about the end product). There are lecture quizzes based on the topics you learned and are online. Some final exam questions are the same as these lecture quizzes. The final exam is very do-able if you attempted the past-year papers AND come to Scott for verification of your answers. As I said, if the lectures with Galvin are not helpful at all, I recommend additional sources: Organic Chemistry Master and Khan Academy (they have an entire syllabus similar to the topic order you will learn in chem1002). Good luck! I flunked a lot of the quizzes but still managed to get HD in the end with huge help from Scott and Morgan.

This unit is very fun and so are the labs, well coordinated labs especially if you have Josie! Also the mechanisms are relatively easy to learn and learning about compounds in everyday items is very interesting.

boring, hardest part was the mechanisms which the lecturer brushed over and didnt really have any examples

All the people below are spuds. It's mostly mechanisms and they're really not that hard. The lab component is really interesting, you'll spend 3 hours making shit and as long as you don't fu*ck it up you can easily get 80%+ for every lab. Yes there's quite a bit but just pay attention you grubs. Half of the practice exam questions were on the actual exam.

DO NOT DO THIS UNIT!!!!! PLEASE DONT!! this unit was my elective and i did worse on this than my other CORE science units. SOOO Much memorisation (more than ANHB!), i took the deferred exam so not sure how the original exam was but it was about 3 pages of just mechanisms alone, (my brain was fried) and the lecturer Matt was incharge of the mechanisms lectures and he waffled so much and did not put the actual mechanisms on the slides, so when it came time to review for the exams you had to rewatch all 15 of his lectures. Keith was the only good lecturer, and he made his content very easy to understand. the lab component was every 2 weeks and the lab mark you get is based on your performance and every lab i lost a mark and never knew why, because they dont tell you so you cant improve!! also theres quizes every week and prelabs on top of that so if you have alot of content heavy units DONT TAKE THIS with them!! this brought down my GPA SO MUCH!

Labs are fun - but the lecture content was not. Compared to CHEM1001, it's a lot of blatant memorisation and not much understanding of how any of the organic mechanisms work (makes it feel more content heavy as a result). Practice exams don't have any answers provided which makes studying for the exam awful, but the exam's structure is quite similar to the practice exam. The exam being 2/3rds multi choice and 1/3 short answer is also nice.

3 lectures and a workshop each week, which is quite a bit. You can score very high on each of the weekly quizzes if you take good notes and do the practice quizzes. There are 6 3-hour labs. Some of these labs were very intense and time-pressured. Your performance in the labs are graded, so prepare beforehand (read lab manual, make sure you understand what will happen). The exam has some similar questions to the practice exams, so the practice exams are worth doing. However, no answers are provided for the practice exams, making the exam revision pretty tedious. Overall, its not the worst unit, but only take it if you have to

this unit was interesting but overall not worth it. the exam pretty much requires a bunch of memorization and very little actual understanding of the mechanism and reactions. the labs were stressful at times but very fun and i got close with my class by the end of the sem. wouldn't recommend taking this unit unless you need to.

Unit is interesting for the first few weeks, but then they introduce a ton of mechanisms and reactions which you are expected to remember. Very content heavy with 3 lectures per week on and probably 45 minutes for every lecture. The exam mainly focused on the mechanisms though so that's a plus. Would not recommend this rigorous unit unless you need it.

Interesting unit that focuses mainly on organic chemistry and mechanisms. The lectures were extremely content heavy with quite a bit of superfluous information. The associate lecturer was phenomenal. He was very attentive and helpful in tutorials and lectures. The UC gave occasional live lectures and tutorials on BB collaborate with many not being recorded/missing. A lot of time in lectures was spent explaining practical applications and real life scenarios that wasn't assessed. He was very dismissive and tried to motivate on negative reinforcement. Fortunately, he was excellent at explaining the mechanisms and drawing them out. The last 2 lecturers had minimal content and concentrated on biochemistry and transition metals. Their lectures were pretty good, but a bit lengthy. Assessments consisted of weekly quizzes, lab specimens and lab quizzes. The weekly quizzes and lab quizzes were pretty straight-forward, however, the labs required a lot of preparation and insanely good time management skills. The exam was mainly on mechanisms and wasn't too bad. Please only do this unit if it is a prerequisite and you are warned if you want to do it as an elective.
